Friend has an '08 Mazda3i 5-speed. Whenever he really gets on the gas pedal, even if he's only going in a straight line, like just taking it to redline in 1 and 2, whenever he slows down to turn onto a street or whatever, the power steering makes that whining noise. Power steering fluid levels are normal when the car is parked, but looks the slightest bit foamy if you check it right after the above scenario.

Ideas?

43k miles btw.

Foamy means there is air getting into the pump somewhere. There shouldn't be any foam at all.

Sounds like a defective relief valve in the pump...? Not operating correctly will cause this... Also I seem to remember something about Mazda and a change in PS fluid type...? Might be what the recall is about...?

The recall was for loss of assist which could occur at any time.
Fluid is still Dexron II or Mazda equivilent.
Seems like you may be getting a little air in the system, check all lines etc. for any signs of leaks.
