Here is my setup:

Comcast cable internet ----- > Motorola Cable Modem -----> Router -----> 2 PC's

My PC hooks up just fine. I recently brought my GF home another PC that I setup at work. Everything worked great. I installed the latest updates and all the software she needed from work. Internet worked just fine.

I bring it home and hook it up through my router and I dont get the internet. it says "Limited or no connectivity" and there is the yellow exclamation mark on the icon by the clock. In the device manager it says the device is working properly. Here is what I have tried to resolve it:

Tried a different port in the switch. No go.

Tried taking the working cable that is in my NIC and plugged it into the new PC. No go.

Bypassed the router all-together and went with a straight shot from the modem to the PC. No go.

Tried different network cables. No go.

Installed a new network card. Same error.

Tried reinstalled the intergrated NIC. No go.

Limted or no Connectivity. GRRRRR

Reformated the box. No go.

What on earth is going on???

Thanks in advance.

are you using a dsl modem/router with a single port that then goes to a switch? if so, those usually just hand out a single IP address and you may be able to login and adjust that.

have you tries assigning this other computer a static ip on your network (along with a gateway and dns) to see if you could get connectivity?

if that doesnt help, it might not hurt to give more details about your networking gear and setup.

Comcast modems need to be reset any time a new mac address is attached, I'd reset the router and then plug it directly into the computer and see if you can connect to the internet. If that works you know the problem is your router.

You have to power cycle the modem then attach the ethernet cable once all the lights on the modem come on, I believe the cable has to be physically disconnected as well, you can't just reboot the modem with your computer turned off. You'll have to go through the same procedure to get the router hooked up again, disconnect the ethernet cables, reboot, wait for the modem to come online, connect the ethernet cable and reboot the router.

I'm guessing you've got some security enabled on your router that is blocking WAN access, do an ipconfig /all and make sure you've got a default gateway and dns servers, I'm guessing that you don't for some reason and it most likely has nothing to do with your OS. Instead of reinstalling the OS you could have tried booting into Linux from a Live CD, in my experience it'll pick up wired networking automatically every time.

Exactly +1

You need to reset your modem, sometimes with comcast you may need to leav it unplugged for a bit to fully reset
