Odd Problem New case for old gateway

Fixing an old gateway essential slot 1 p3 500mhz box with ps2 ports, for a friend. He blew the proprietory power supply, so considering he wanted to add drives later, I went ahead and put his guts in generic case. Boots up but the mouse doesn't work. Win 98 gives the mouse not found error message at boot. Keyboard won't work either. If you unplug the mouse and plug the keyboard into the mouse port most of the keys will function (enough to get into bios)
There is a 2 wire connector on ther mb for the original ps. I think it was some kind of ps overheat shutdown gizmo. Could this be related.
I'm sure lots of you have converted gateways before.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
