Odd problem, is it IRQ stuff?

soyo dragon +
cmedia 8738 on board sound
on board via nic (connected to switch>cable modem)
linksys nc100u network card in pci slot 4 (connected to another pc, not internet sharing, just for files)
xp pro

all of these are on irq 11, xp pro shows no conflicts with the devices and they seem to work great, despite all being on the same irq (netgear nic was having tons of problems on irq 11 with the other devices, this linksys is not). the video is smooth in games, the audio doesn't crackle. however, when i host games for my buds they are getting bad warping. sound/video still works fine, but could the network card be crapping out? i only have operation flashpoint installed and that's where the problem is (i never had a problem on my old pc).

i surf fine and everything is working perfect. i cant really change the irq's around without doing some major work (bios adjustments, changing the acpi manager or whatever). i would install another sound card but i dont want to junk the system up.

just in windows like this, and i run a ping from the command prompt, i get real skewed numbers. like from my isp it goes
50ms
77 ms
48 ms
178ms

or to the forums here
99ms
108ms
255ms
94 ms

and this is for all sites. sometimes i can ping continuous for a minute and it looks good, then 30 secs later i have a spike. i assume this is responsible for all the warping (i am teh smart!). could this be from my end and all the stuff on one irq, or does it look like my cable isp is going funky at the moment? i sure hope it's just a coincidence that the cable is messed up as soon as i built the new rig and not a problem.

also, i can disconnect from the other pc (disable the network or the cable) and still the same results. so no traffic or connection to the other pc is made (btw when it is connected, they can freakin see we stuff. like my roger wilco ip is normally 24.xxx, but once they connect they see an internal ip in the 169 range, same for the game. they connect to 24., but it shows the game hosted on 169.x if i disable the network they see 24. why the hell can they see the internal ip?) be back in a few hours.

Yeah, could be IRQ trouble. I've heard of other people having problems that sounded like IRQ trouble after enabling both the onboard network and sound on the Soyo under 2000/XP. So it's probably the onboard stuff and not the PCI NIC which is the problem. Which really sucks, considering that the onboard sound is actually worth using. If that is the problem, I'm not sure what you can do about apart from using a sound card, unless you want to disable ACPI, which sounds very messy. You might be able to easily get the Linksys card off 11 by disabling something else in the BIOS, like a serial port, or by moving down a slot. But again, I think the problem is onboard, so that might not help at all.

ping times are probably spiking due to internet congestion....the IRQ 11 'issue' shouldn't be the cause of that (in theory it shouldn't affect speed at all).

Start narrowing the problem down. Try pinging your ISP - if you still get ping spikes there, then it's not congestion causing your trouble. Then you could switch the configuration of the NICs, which shouldn't take more than a minute or two (if they both auto-detecting settings and use the same protocols, you could just switch the cables). If you still get odd pings, then it's not the problem of the onboard NIC itself. So it would have to IRQ's or some other configuration issue. And, yes, it "shouldn't" be a problem sharing IRQ's with ACPI, but it just doesn't work out in practice, especially if a sound card is involved.

<< Please read the FAQ: Why are all my devices using one IRQ in Win2K/WinXP? >>

thanks. i know that the soyo board was designed from the ground up for the video/sound/onboard nic to share irq 11 without any problems (at least that's what the folks at soyo say). i doubted the second nic would hurt anything.

when i ping the isp the results are the same

or something to that affect. i may give them a call a little later, i hope it's just a coincidence. ive had 0 problems with video/sound etc, so i want to say it's not an irq problem (also no problems under device manger, etc).

much to people's chagrin however, i was able to move some of the things around irq wise (this is a completely seperate topic now. folks were having problems assinging things to different irqs other than 11). i simply set the bios to non pnp, manual config, reserve irq 11, 9, and 5. then changed acpi to standard pc in device manager. after xp pro did a ton of work it showed that some components had changed (video or nic was now at 5, i can't remember which). anyways, it is able to be changed (despite what some said about them being impossible to move).

i kinda figured that it either worked or it didn't. must be on the cable end; again ill call later and see what's up. thanks for all the replies.

btw does anyone have any idea as to why others can see the internal IP address of my other computer????????? roger wilco shows it as hosting my channel, and my games (but they connect to my normal 24.xx address). the other computer has no access to the internet what-so-ever (sp?). it's just merely connected to this computer so i can transfer files back and forth (i dont even keep the monitor on unless im watching tv on it's tuner).

clever i read you incorrectly. ill have to get the ip of a dns server or something. or better yet, i could just ping the first ip in a tracert, stupid me.
