odd power on/off/hybrid sleep behavior

Hi all,

I upgraded my pc a while back and everything went well except for one problem.

I mis-understood the power requirements on the new mobo. It has a 24 pin power connector, my power supply has a 20 pin connector.

I connected the 20 pin to the 24 pin connector anyhow, and it seemed to work. But my computer has one odd problem and I'm wondering if its related to the power supply.

If i shut down my pc (windows vista 64bit) via the shut down command, and then try to turn it back on with the pc's power switch, it starts to boot into windows and then just freezes at the screen with the progress bar. The only way for me to avoid this is if after i shut down, if i turn off the power at the UPS and then hit the power button so that the power is completely discharged from the PC (when i hit the power button after turning off the UPS the computer seems to come on for a split second so i assume there's some residual charge being stored in there some where). After doing that, i can then power up the PC and it works.

Another problem i have is with hybrid sleep. Usually, the first time i try to hibernate after having shutdown the PC, it never works. The power button blinks, but the computer is still powered on and nothing i do will wake it backup, other then killing the power. After killing the power and coming back on, hybrid sleep will then work (power button blinks, but the computer appears to be off and is using almost no power).

Does it seem likely this is because I'm using a 20pin PSU on a mobo with a 24pin power connector? Or is there some other explanation?

thanks

Can you borrow a 24 pin PS and see if that fix's your issues. I wouldnt have used a 20 pin if it had of been me. There might a slight chance you have done some damage to your MoBo. Try the 24 pin if the prob is still there which i doubt all is good.

With your hibernate! I installed a game once and my ps did the same as yours. I unstalled the game and then it wouldnt do it. It could be a software. Sorry I dont know to much about the setting for vista as yet but there could be a setting in the Hotkey section somewhere.

No unfortunately i dont have a 24 pin PSU. I actually posted on here before I used the 20 pin PSU and was told it shouldn't do any harm. The worst that should have happened is it just wouldn't work. I dont think i've done any damage because the system is very stable. I haven't had any crashes or other problems, besides this odd behavior i described.

I dont remember for sure but i think the hibernate issued happened before i installed anything. My guess is it's something with the PSU. So maybe I'll just pick up a 24 pin PSU from newegg and see how it goes. I'd probably have to pick up a new psu anyhow if i upgrade my vid card, and I'm planning on upgrading that sometime soon anyhow.

Yeah no thats fine. I just cant see a 20 pin working in a 24 pin slot. Those four other pins have to be there for a reason I guess.

Wouldnt the voltage settings in Bios be unstable if the mobo wasnt getting the correct supply? or even the v setting for ram.
