Greetings all,

I bought from ebay (I know - ugh) an MS-6553 (or MS-6712 - not sure - have to look) motherboard.
It was used in compaq machines.
It's an nforce1 chipset with the intergrated video and all the extra goodies.
Right now it fires up and will run my AMD 1.0ghz cpu.....but it's running it @ 133fsb - 1.33ghz.

My question is this.

It's an nforce motherboard made my MSI for compaq......would I risk damaging the board if I flashed it with a MSI BIOS from another nforce1 motherboard (like the K7N420pro)??
Or should I just try to get a BIOS update from compaq and see if I can fix my problem that way??

Any help is appreciated.

Flashing a mobo with a BIOS that wasn't made for it is risky. Does the board have any jumpers that might control the CPU's bus speed and the memory's bus speed?

Bigger picture: you can get a brand-new Shuttle AN35N Ultra for $65, or a 133MHz-based CPU for this board for about $42 (Duron 1.6GHz, for example).

actually got the board to read the athlon 1.0 @ 200fsb.
had to set the switch to "safe" instead of "auto"
dunno why though.
I tested it with a XP1700 and it ran it at default settings 266fsb no problem.
there is nothing in the BIOS or any switch that I can see to change voltage, cpu, fsb, etc.
very basic board, but works great.

thanks for the response mechBgon

Sure thing :) Do the standard nVidia drivers (3.13 driver kit) seem to be working, or have you progressed to that phase yet?

Hmmm. If the 1.0Ghz CPU is running fine at 1.33Ghz; why worry about it. 'Cause hey, free performance!

the standard Nvidia drivers work great with the motherboard.
no issues there whatsoever.
as for why I don't run it @ 133fsb
the heatsink I got for it is crappy and small. I think it's a heat related issue.
that's about the only other problem with this board.......only one temp readout under AIDA32 and it says system, not cpu...but the temps did change while benching it.
