OK here is the sitch.
One of my clients just got in their DSL line. It works fine except for outgoing (SMTP) mail. They have 7 W98 machines connected to a W2k server. The server has the DSL line attached. I have tried Winproxy and Sygate and have the same problem.
The problem.
ATT requires authentication for the SMTP server, i.e. they have to log in. This works fine from the server, but is sparadic at best from the clients. What happens is the user name/password dialog box pops up and, even though they put in correct info, it will not go through. I can tell from the proxy logs that it is passing the info correctly, but the SMTP server will not accept it. As I said, sometimes it works fine, sometimes not.
The second problem is that ATT requires that on the e mail address line they have to have the outbound e mail log on addy. Normaly this is not a problem but these people want to use encrypted e mail and it requires that the e mail addy and return mail addy are the same.
The solution.
OK so what I guess I need is a new way to send out e mail. Options would be 1. is there a place that will do this for me? i.e. will someone give or sell me outbound (SMTP) mail service? or 2. Set my own SMTP server. I'm thinking some kind of linuxx box.
