I have a Dell 6000 with Vista Ultimate sitting on it. Cruising the net today I got a BSOD and the computer would not restart. It said there was no primary drive. Considering the laptop is roughly 5 years old, I figured the drive was dead. I pulled it out and put in my desktop to see if I could grab some of the recent files I made. Turns out the desktop saw the hard drive just fine. I ran an antivirus and scan disk through the drive. No viruses, but there were errors on the drive that Vista fixed. I put the drive back in the laptop and it now starts fine and runs fine.
When I first turned on the laptop, however, the modem and sound didn't work. I went and grabbed the drivers and tried reinstalling the them. The modem reinstalled, but sound does not work. I have tried system restore, new drivers any thoughts before I nix it and start from scratch?

Synopsis:
BSOD - suspected hard drive failure
Placed drive in desktop, fixed errors, no viruses
Put drive back in laptop, starts up fine
Modem and Sound didn't work
Resinstalled drivers for modem it works
Tried fixing sound, but won't work

Considering its 5 years old and you found errors its safe to say the HDD is on its way out. So i would replace it. But just to be safe i would run memtest to make sure it isn't the RAM going bad and causing the curruption on the HDD.

If it was me...I just do a new OS install. Sounds more like
OS corruption more than a Hardware issue. However, most
of the time BSOD are caused by bad hardware or bad drivers.

Thanks guys, I figured it was something along those lines. I was just curious if there was something I was missing.
