odd issue: SGS2 shuts off overnight while charging

I've been experiencing an odd issue recently which I haven't had before. For the past few weeks or so, the vast majority of the time (but not every time) I'll wake up to find my phone shut off with a full charge even though I plug it in while on. I'm using the same charger I always have without issue, but now there's something going on. I don't use it as an alarm clock, though I usually have it set as a backup... but the phone is off long before that alarm would ring.

Has anybody seen this before? When I try to google it I get a bunch of threads with the opposite problem: People who try to charge with the phone OFF but it keeps turning itself back ON which isn't my issue.

Nope. I've never had any problems like that with my i777. If I charge it when it's off, it stays off, and if I charge it when it's on, it stays on... Return for warranty?

rogue app turning it off?

This is what I'm guessing and I've been deleting apps here and there trying to fix it, but nothing yet. It's not a huge deal and I might find the right ICS rom pretty soon to reflash and start fresh. Just an odd thing that seems to happen regularly enough recently that I wondered if anybody else had it too.

It never happens during normal operation during the day. I've never had a full OS crash or reboot, it's only during the night when it's charging.

Which from you using?

I'm running this one currently. Not perfect but seems stable so far. My phone is for calls and web only pretty much. My buttons don't light up I don't care.

I have tried most of them, and the best ICS i777 ROM so far I think is this one:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563747

It has the best support, is updated regularly with things like new kernels, and has been very stable in the days I have used it.

With that said, I am currently using this ROM:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1564419

It is not nearly as stable- things crash all the time. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

The only reason I use it is because I want ICS to look like fraking ICS and SHOstock2 lacks a complete theme right now.

To move your app data I just used Titanium to pull the apps from a Nandroid backup. This worked for everything but Touchwiz apps (like dialer, messaging, etc) as those changed in the update (for the worse IMHO). To get your txt log over to ICS I installed GoSMS, used it backup feature, restored that backup in ICS, which then gave me the log in the default messaging app.

Yeah, I'll echo Poofy's comments. I went with ShoStock on Mr. PoofyHairGuy's recommendation and I've been very happy with the stability and battery life. I've had no issues at all. Perfectly reliable, no weirdness of any kind at all so far and my battery life has been excellent (I took it off the charger 7 hours ago and I'm at 75% and I've been using it sporatically all day). All of the functions that I've looked at work fine - the buttons light up just like they are supposed to.

As far as the theme, I agree with Poofy on this too, although ShoStock 1.1 has a lot more wallpaper choices and that's good enough for me. I don't need much in terms of themes, but I did want to ditch the <1.1 gingerbread wallpapers.

For backup and restore, I followed Dulanic's advice in post #4 in this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2235643

I'm sure Poofy's would work but the idea of having Titanium backing up to Dropbox appealed to my inner geek. I did a full backup of Titanium to Dropbox, and then installed ShoStock and then skipped Google setup and did a Titanium "restore all missing apps and user data" which got me most of my data back and then used SMS Backup+ for texts restore.

I've had this happen. But it is usually if I undervolt my CPU by a lot, and it just basically doesn't wake up from deep sleep. Are you undervolting or overclocking the phone?

Come on over to ICS gorcorps. The water is fine.

Actually Dulanic's post is what allowed me to try the different ICS roms lol. Dropbox integration is good stuff.

Ehhh. There may be sleep issues. ICS is far from fine when you compare it to GB. Maybe the i777 has some amazing developers or something, but the i9100 is nowhere near perfect. There was a sleep of death issue yesterday, but even on the kernel before that, I still sometimes have trouble waking my device up.

It may be good as a daily driver, but I don't see it working 100%.

Is the screen staying on overnight? It could be overheating.

Shouldn't be, I manually turn off my screen via the power button every time it leaves my hands. It's just a habit I've developed.

I'm on Unnamed, a GB rom. I won't touch an ICS rom until it does absolutely everything mine does right now. I consider any lost feature a step backwards, even if it's as trivial as the button lights. I don't mind waiting for something that works 100%.

The rom includes an OC rom, but I haven't had it above the stock 1.2GHz in a while. The voltages might be different from stock too, but I haven't touched them in months and it just now started issues.

So you basically haven't changed anything in a while, and all of a sudden the phone now randomly shuts off at night?

Sounds like some sort of SOD caused by an app.

Nothing major anyway. I'll try to figure out what apps I've been installing and get rid of stuff I don't need.

True. Putting my tf101 on ics totally gave me sod and reboot freezes. That's why I am holding off on having it on my sgs2.
