odd HDD issue

I have a maxtor 40 gig hd that i had been using as teh master dirve, it showed up as 31 gigs in my old system, and when i put in to my new system as the slave this time, it showed up again as 31 gigs. I switched it to the master channel as a single drive to load winme on as a backup os, and when i posted, it showed up all of the sudden as a 40gig hd. any way to get those 9 gigs back while running it as a slave? I have an expo 8kha with e 1.3 ghz chip running win xp.
