Odd FTP Question

So there I was, trying to log in using FTP into a site to do some web site work. I type in ftp.websitename.com into SmartFTP and it comes back as unable to resolve. I try in Internet Explorer with the same result (ftp://ftp.websitename.com in IE). However, if I type ftp://websitename.com in IE it works?! SmartFTP wants it to be ftp.websitename.com and won't take just websitename.com.

Did that all make sense? Why would websitename.com work and ftp.websitename.com not?

ummmm..no dude...both ft.xxxx and www.xxxx are subdomains...they just happen to be popular and accepted default subdomains for Http and FTP services.

I appreciate the help. Sorry about the lack of knowledge on the subdomain part. Makes sense once I stop to think about it and let the caffeine into my veins.
