Odd Error Message

I have a MSI K8NGM-V mobo with an AMD Sempron 64 2800+ Palermo cpu, 1 gig of RAM and a EVGA GeForce 7600 GTS video card, running WinXP Home with the second update installed.

I left the pc running last night and this morning I saw an error message that stated:

nVidia Boot Agent 217.0513
PXE-EG1: Media Test failure, check cable.
PXE-M0F: Exiting nVidia Boot Agent

Reboot and select proper boot device or
Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key

and the system was hung up on that screen.

I hit the reset button but saw the same error message pop up - WinXP would not load.

I shut off the PC then turned it on again and went into the BIOS setup. Looked at the Boot up sequence and it was set at 1. Floppy drive, 2. CD/DVD drive, 3. nVidia Boot Agent.

I tried changing the order around (since I do not have a floppy drive on this pc, I left it CD,nVidia and disabled, saved it and restarted but got the same result. Shut down and restarted and changed the BIOS again back to Floppy, CD, nVidia boot.

This time, it went through the same error screens, but then after exiting nVidia boot agent, screen went black, then WinXP loaded and ran fine.

As a precaution I went to System Restore and restored from the previous system restore checkpoint from this morning around 3:57 AM. Ran restore and when the pc restarted, saw the same nVidia boot agent error messages, then WinXP started up.

Anyone have a clue as to what is going on?😕

I know I am starting to sound like a broken record on this but..

Try resetting you CMOS per your MB manual.

KGB,

OK, just so I understand it correctly, you are saying that I should open up my PC case and hit the "Clear CMOS" button on the motherboard?

According to the MB manual, there's a button labelled "SW1" on the board that you press to clear the CMOS.

Once I do that, will there be any other resets or updating that I will have to do to my PC to get it back to where it was (minus the current problem)? That is, will I have to reload software etc. after Clearing the CMOS? Or will that just do something with the mobo that I will not have to do much adjustment for afterward?

Thanks,

Thanks KGBguy,

The resetting CMOS did the trick. After I powered down and hit the clear CMOS button on the mobo, I checked the BIOS when I restarted the PC and in the boot sequence, there was a new 3rd option, Floppy, CD/DVD, HDD and then nVidia Boot Agent.

All's well. Thanks for the tip!

This forum has yet to fail me during my techy moments of crisis.

Thanks again!
