Odd drive letter assignement on XP?

Mullzy

Senior member
For some reason my driver letters were assigned as follows on recently built new PC:

IDE1 Master - F:
IDE1 Slave - C:
IDE2 Master (CD-ROM) E:
IDE2 Slave (DVD) D:

What the heck? I've never seen anything like this before.

I believe I'm going to have to reinstall XP to get C: as my system drive (changing it must cause some problems).

If I remove both my slave drives just for the XP install will that help?

cheers,
Mullzy

Windows will assign any primary active partition first, before secondary/logical partitions. You can use the disk Management tool to change drive letters for all drives except the system drive.
