Odd computer shut down issues: ATi 5770 just added

Help!

After gaming for a little while (between 10 mins and an hour in Mass Effect 1) my machine will either hard lock or just shut off!

Previous build with no problems:

AMD X2 6000+ (3.1~ghz)
4 gig DDR2
EVGA 8800 GTS 640
Gigabyte board
Antec True Power 450
2x 1 TB Hitachi drives
1x 70 gig Raptor (boot drive for Win 7 64)

The problem started when i added the ATI 5770... so yeah most people would say PSU is too small / old right? Well the 8800 used more power than the 5770! Any ideas?

that's really odd. that 8800gts 640 pulls 106 watts at peak load and the 5770 pulls 75 so ps should definitely not be a factor.
my old m/b was an nvidia chipset and so it had a bios entry for nvidia graphics card boost.
if your gigabyte m/b is nvidia based, maybe you still have that setting enabled and the ati card is getting too much of something?
just a shot in the dark.

It's definitely some sort of power problem IMO. I'm running a 5770 on a similar system with a 450w PSU. It could just be a coincidence that you added a new gfx card. Maybe your PSU is just getting old and about to buy it. Either that or you have a bad card or bad drivers.

Try putting the 8800gts back in and see if it still does it. If not, then its a problem with the 5770.

Airflow is good, i have a big ANTEC 900 case with fans all over the place.

Everything is relatively clean / tidy in the case...

I'm going to play Mass Effect 2 tonight and i will see if the problem continues.

I am also using the latest drivers from AMD's website
Any other ideas?

Also this ANTEC PSU is less than 3 months old, bought brand new from Newegg

What temperature is your 5770 hitting while gaming? Is the fan control set to manual?

Reseating the heatsink or allowing automatic fan control may resolve your problem.

It could be the drivers. I had similar issues with the latest drivers with my 4870. I'm using the most recent WHQL drivers and they've been rock solid.

Holy crap there are tons of people with newer radeon cards having all kinds of weird issues... wtf

http://forums.amd.com/game/categories.cfm?catid=260

also in mass effect 2 its doing the same things it did in mass effect 1. Random hard locks requiring reboot and or completely shutting off. Really weird

I tried manual fan control , temps are not a problem (atleast what ccc is showing) Its gotta be driver or windows update i think.

Crappy

I would agree. I had the EXACT same issues when I was using the latest drivers. I wouldn't even be playing a 3D game and my temps would be at 54 degrees Celsisus and it would random hard lock my PC. Go with the most recent WHQLs and see if they fix your problem.

I have the latest drivers from amd, maybe i should try XFX's bundle...

I really think this OCZ powersupply will fix my problems. The antec just doesn't feel big enough even though my system might not pull a full 400 watts at load. (hell it might not even pull a full 350 at load but its still too close for comfort)

I would recommend just waiting for a new set of drivers if you are going to keep the ATI/AMD card. I did exactly what you are proposing and not even 10 minutes and my XFX card crashed. In XP, you don't gray screen, it just crashes. In Vista I've experienced the gray screens.

EDIT: and if you want to check the wattage draw, you can go to Lowes and get a Watt Load Meter. I did and my i7 rig at stock with a 5870 will draw about 260w. (rig2 sig)

Did you run Driver Sweeper after uninstalling the Nvidia drivers? If not, that's probably your issue. Here are a few quick things to try:

- Uninstall your current ATI driver. Download and install Driver Sweeper from Guru3D. Reboot into safe mode and run Driver Sweeper and optionally run CCleaner afterward. Reboot normally and install Catalyst 10.2. Try a game and see if it crashes.
- Remove your case's side panel and optionally position a desk fan blowing in. Download and install Tech Power Up's GPU-z and enable logging to file. Start up a game, and after the crash, check the temperatures to see if any skyrocket.

If neither of these options work / point out an obvious problem, you may have a bad card. I'd RMA.

New powersupply installed - 4 hours straight of mass effect 2, no crashes, no GSOD.

Thanks for all the suggestions, the combination of crappy pre 10.2 catalyst drivers and a weak PSU were the culprits.
