Thinking about buying that item linked above and removing the thermoelectric cooler. Then I would mount the cooler at the top of my case and use the case power supply to run it since it is already DC. What do you think? Is this wortwhile to experiment with, I already see some problems with this but want to know what you think.

Yeah that would be easy to do as well. Also thought about making it into a case itself. If you already had a water cooling setup it would be easier to use this cooler to cool the water. But I was thinking of a cheap way to cool the entire case without going to a nice water cooling setup.

This has been discussed over at the Hard|Forums a few times :) Everytime the conclusion was "no." ;) Those coolers are designed to cool beverages, items that do not produce heat. Putting that cooler into your system with air constantly going in and out and with heat producing elements would simply render the cooler superfluous. It may even damage/shut down the cooler.

For water cooling, again, your system is creating a heat load, so the cooler would not be efficient or powerful enough to cool your water. Many others use compressors/refrigerator units to cool their water to under 0*C ;)

Will the cooler maybe lower your case's ambient temps? Most likely not. Will the cooler lower your water temps? Most likely not.
