Hey guys

I have a 2013 auto v6 Mustang with only 6k miles on it. I always park with the hand brake out of habit.

Well I was leaving somewhere (I had fully released the hand brake before moving) - I drove on level ground for maybe 200 feet or so, stopped, then turned out and headed down a rather large hill.

When I started heading down hill, it felt like the driver side front tire was getting "stuck" on something. I decided to hit the brake (lightly) and it felt like I was hitting the ABS system as soon as I hit the brake pedal.

I pushed slightly harder and it felt like it just "kicked" back into place. No problems after that.

Any idea what that might be? Wish I could explain it better...

Have I stumped the car gods??

If you've ever rode a bicycle as a kid or at any time where the front brake was mis-aligned with the tire and the tire rubbed the brake... that's what it felt like. Only think of the front tire with a warped rim, so it only rubbed in certain spots as the tire rotated.

Rained recently? Washed car yesterday? I can tell you it probably was not the hand brake as most of those work on rear only.

Did you get a flashing dashboard light indicating brakes/ABS?

Didn't notice anything unusual on the dash.

Hm did it rain... I don't think so. At least not that day. I really seemed to think it was due to the incline because I stopped before pulling out (only had to lightly use the brakes), THEN hit the incline.

Sounds like a stuck parking brake. May have felt like ABS activation because the wheel was making kind of a 'stuttering' movement- brake grabs, is briefly overpowered, grabs again...ect. Kind of like the loud groan (almost kind of a popping noise) that you can make if you creep forward at a light with very light brake application.

...surely I'm not the only one that can make that racket in pretty much any car, right? Sometimes I do it just to mess with people. 😛

Your e-brake mech is in the caliper, and IMO the Ford variant of that design has always been kinda crappy. Have had them stick before. The variant used on some Japanese cars looks similar, but the functional component inside the caliper works differently. I think Ford is the 'ball and ramp' type.

I don't think I've ever seen a caliper that functions as a service + e-brake that I've considered 'less-than-crappy'. What ones am I missing?

To the OP: I second that the e-brake was likely *slightly* dragging and then it 'released' upon hitting the service brake.

EDIT: BTW: it takes it happening more than once to be considered a 'behavior'.

True. How should I describe it?

Anyways, I haven't had any trouble last couple days so I'm not too concerned. It reminded me though of the first time I experienced the 4x4 "spring" affect on sharp turns because at the time I was like WTH?
