Odd benchmark results for WD1001FALS in RAID

Can anyone explain why the 1TB black drives perform so poorly in a RAID array in this extremetech article? I'm not sure I have much faith in those benchmarks, but it did get me thinking. Are the 640GB drives (more specifically the blue AAKS) that much better suited for RAID?

iirc the TLER needs to be switched on some of the 1TB black drives. This wasn't know right away, which may have cause false benchmarks.

I was wondering about that, but they don't specify in the article one way or the other.
