I'm trying to set up a pretty basic network. On the main computer, I installed an ASUS WL-500g router, and on my computer I've got an ASUS 138g PCI network card w/ antennae. At first, the router successfully managed to kill the comcast cable connection on the main computer (heh), but the PCI card on the other computer connected to the router's signal after I fiddled with the WEP and SSID settings.
A few hours later after calling comcast and reconfiguring, the cable connection was back up, but the PCI card had lost connection with the router. I hadn't changed any of the encryption settings at all. Weirdly, though, the network utilities showed the card as not having an SSID, so I tried to set it back to what I had set on the router, but it wouldn't let me! Entered the name in the field, hit apply, then the field would simply go blank again; no name would stick.
I tried uninstalling the utilities and drivers for the card and reinstalling, but it didn't help- still encountered the same problem. What's odd is that the card can sense the network after taking a site survey- (in fact, it also senses my neighbor's network!)- but it won't connect, even when the WEP settings are disabled.
Is there something I'm missing here? Could something in the router settings be causing this, or perhaps one of Windows XP's networking "features" is preventing it? I'm beginning to think that maybe the card is just defective. Any advice would be much appreciated!
