Went to my local OD (one of those going out of business) and saw one of Siemens Gigaset (2.4GHz multi-unit phone systems) Demo units on the shelf. The OD sales guy would not sell it to me because "it's a demo unit and it doesn't work (empty housing) so we cannot sell it. We dump them in garbage containers." I managed to convince the manager to give it to me anyway. Well, it turns out that those units do function: handsets work fine (and those sell for about $80 regular price) and the base is only missing an RJ-6 plug on the board (I'm talking about a Gigaset 2415.) So if you can solder a bit, you may get a perfectly functioning unit for free. 2415 I got sells for ~$170.

Be forewarned, though: some units could be damaged (they stick those security pins into them which get awefully close to units' circuit boards). But then, they are for free.

Alternative: you may still find some Gigaset units at 50% off. Most of those come with rebates from Siemens (siemenscordless.com), up to $50. I got two 2415s at $92 - $50 MIR = $42 each.

haha, sounds to me like the OD sales dude wanted to take one home for himself. Heck, if I worked there and was gonna lose my job I'd take everything I could :)

On the subject of dumpster diving, has anyone ever considered diving at a bookstore right when the magazines change? I was once at a Borders, and a couple was asking about this magazine, and the saleslady said "Oh, that was last months, we've replaced all the racks with this month's issue." To which the gentleman replied, "what happens to the old magazines?" To which the sales lady said, "I'm sorry, but I can't tell you that.

considering each magazine is only at MOST $.50 ea. to the publishers, I can't imagine they ship them back for back-issue sales. D'you figure they just toss them?

(be a great way to get free issues of playboy... er, I mean, PC Week, yeah!)

One of our stores had magazines - the magazine guy always picked up the old issues when he brought the new. They only charge the store for the ones that sold. A big store like Borders probably does it differently though.

Bobartig,
Most mags have the covers ripped off (so they can prove they destoyed them) then they are thrown in the dumpster. I used to work next to a bookstore and one of the employes told me about it, because i was always in there buying Art Mags that run between $10 an $25 a piece.
Also sometimes i'll check places like Blockbuster for Jewel Cases. They throw away 50-100 at a time. But asking them for the cases works sometimes too.
Just for the record, I'm a "found object" artist. So i do a lot of Diving. Got my 25 inch Tv, 19 inch TV,many vcr's, stereo's, old computers and monitors ect. that way. It helped that i worked at an apartment complex in a college town. Students move like clockwork and they trash all kinds of stuff cause they didn't have to pay for it(mom & dad). Hope this helps.
