OCZ Vertex 3 worth $58?

ok you guys recommended to me - Crucial M4, Samsung 830, Intel 330, or Plextor for 120gb reliable SSD driver.

Everywhere I read OCZ SSD and PSU get a lot of hate.

But do you think this is a good deal?

OCZ Vertex 3 for $58 - that is final price. tax+shipping.

it has 3 year warranty.

I already passed on the Intel 330 for $90 w/ free shipping before the Black Friday. I thought there would be one cheaper on Black Friday, but cheapest I seen was $100, no free shipping, $89 after rebate.

what do you think of this OCZ?

For that price, definitely. There is always warranty if you run into problems and it's not like all OCZ SSDs are defective.

similar deal available here but just looking at the reviews should basically drive anyone away. Even if it is covered by warranty you have to deal with it and invest time and that would f annoy me.

Most of those newegg reviews are from Morons who don't update the out of box firmware. It's well known the newest firmware on the 3 series drives are solid.

Yes it sucks OCZ ships a lot of drives with older firmware, mostly due to stock being older I'm sure.

I've owned 4-5 OCZ SSD's over the years without issues, including a Vertex 4 in my sig below.

Forget the warranty. OCZ is going out of business. I wouldn't touch that thing with a 10 foot pole as my OS and APP drive.

Use it, but not as your main drive. Cuz next thing you know the memory controller will go kaput!

For the same amount of money I'd get an Agility3, they never seemed to have the problems like the Vertex3's did, and they are dirt cheap... even the Agility4's are down around the .50-.60/GB price range.

Disclaimer: I have an Agility3 60GB in my build, bought it at the height of the OCZ hate (Black Friday 2011, ) but have not had any problems with it. It is still running the original FW.

Go for it. It's a no brainer.

For that price you have nothing to lose.

OCZ gets a lot of hate because of past products and it's trendy to hate on OCZ.

There is a very loud minority that Hates OCZ- and has for a while. But none of them have owned a current PSU or SSD sold today.

That drive is very fast and very cheap. All sandforce drives are basically the same. OCZ uses the same controller and sourced NAND as everyone else. It's not like they make it.

You have nothing to worry about. That drive is actually better and faster than a Crucial for double the price. Now- that is an overated drive IMO.

This is the most idiotic post I ever read here.

The controller is the same as the 100 other models out there. All sandforce controllers are the same and even the firmware is the same across drives. All sandforce SSD's with the same NAND inside act and behave the same way.

There is no difference between the Vertex3 or a Chronos Deluxe or whatever..

The only difference is the NAND inside. Sync vs Async vs Toggle. Toggle is the best and fastest- Usually Toshiba sourced.

That is why you see multiple lines of products by MFG that use sandforce controllers.

Example using OCZ:

AGILITY 3/4
VERTEX 3
VERTEX 3 MAX IOPS

Agility uses the cheapest NAND, VERTEX 3 the better NAND. MAX IOPS uses the higher end toggle variety.

They all use the exact same controller inside. So the difference in speed between the GOOD/BETTER/BEST is strictly the speed of the NAND performance.

Tweakboy has no clue and is brainwashed by all the crap he has read about OCZ here because like I said it's popular to hate on them. But with SSD's they are all basically made of the same parts. The failure rate on all SSD's is very low and especially for an old product like the VERTEX3 that has been out a while- I think your chance of getting one that works perfectly is extremely high. The growing pains and firmware changes of a new model line is all past on that series. I have 10 of them. Never had a problem.

Again- NO.

Agility uses cheaper NAND inside and that is why it is cheaper.

Otherwise they are the exact same.

Oh- and one last thing tweakboy.

You know that the VERTEX4 uses the same memory controller as your beloved and over rated Crucial M4 right ?

It's the same marvel controller.

lol. You crack me up sometimes with the crazy things you say.

Consider this:

Vertex4 and Crucial M4 use the same controller inside
Vertex4 totally smokes the Crucial in speed and performance.
Vertex4 sells for cheaper than the Crucial
Vertex4 has 2 more years warranty (5 years vs 3 years)

That's why it's recommended over the Crucial almost universally- including Tomshardware SSD buyers guide each month. Also the Samsung830 is recommended over the Crucial because it's generally better performance and the same price too.

It's cool to hate on OCZ and jump on the band wagon - but you should do your homework more before you just regurgitate and butcher things you read on these forums. Besides it's not 2011 anymore.

Buying today- and at current street prices OCZ makes a lot of sense based on performance and value. They are fast drives and generally sell for low prices.

Personally I am glad fools hate them and the reputation is suspect because it causes very good products like the Vertex3 to sell for $59 and I enjoy buying them at those prices.

I saw the post you made about faster boot times and such with firmware- and laughed. But you seem like the kind of guy who would appreciate the extra speed of the OCZ. You know a Vertex3 reads faster than a Crucial right ?

For $120 you can RAID0 two of them for 1000MB/sec too.. on a 240GB drive. How's that not freakin' badassed ???

You should change your tune.

Mfusick -- Calm down there. I was willing to give OCZ a shot too. But what tweak said about them likely going under is true. It may be the same materials but warranty is moot when the company behind it no longer exists. That is one key difference between the OCZ drives and the other stuff you listed and a rather important one.

Weren't the OCZ drives the best selling ones for some time? Are they really going under, any real data to support that?

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another OCZ. I have a Mushkin Chronos Deluxe (also sandforce 2281 i believe), and in two other systems I have 128GB Vertex3. They have been amazingly fast and no issues whatsoever.

I say go for it.

While I agree with almost everything you said in these three posts, that one point is just incorrect. The firmware is definitely different across different drives, the controller has to be aware of which kind of NAND is installed to account for wear rating, etc. Plus companies like Intel put LOTS more effort into their firmware (bug detection/correction, validation testing, etc) than smaller companies like OCZ. Which is why people here recommend the Intel 330 drives over the OCZ Vertex3 drives.

Eric Savitz...
"In early October, OCZ disclosed that August quarter results were going to be below expectations, due to “the impact of customer incentive programs which were discovered subsequent to the preliminary announcement during the normal close process, and which the company will be reporting as a material weakness” in its 10-Q for the period."

Sounds like they may be rebating themselves into the poor-house.

Nope! Run from any OCZ nand. Had two Vertex 4 brick within 7 months, on different mobos. They gladly replaced the first, yet they've been azzholes about the 2nd. Nothing but 830's for me. They have strategy issues, caused by management issues, causing product issues. Why would anyone give them their money?

OCZ's failure rate on the Vertex 4 is around 4%, wheres the Samsung 830 is around 1.5% according to hardware.fr polls.

I know its double +, but its still very respectable. (Its the best Vertex flagship made to this point with reliability)

Your situation is rare. OCZ is improving and now that they own Indilinx things should only get better. Offering a 5 year warranty is OCZ trying to convince the Consumer that Indilinx is reliable.

well thx for all the replies. seems mixed between you guys.

it's out of stock now anyway. I guess I wait to long and don't jump fast enough.

I just don't got money to throw around. if something comes broken those return shipping charges can add up fast. 🙁
