OCZ Vertex 2 - worth $100?

Hello,

I'm finally getting into the SSD game and due to budget constraints, the SSD I originally wanted is a personal-favor out of reach.

Saw this on Newegg with a $130 clearance price and $30 MIR, effectively putting it at $100.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...20227551-L010B

Read some of the reviews, and most recent ones are mostly negative, but aside that has a general 3/5 rating.

Just curious on opinons from the posters here if it is a good drive to start my SSD adventures with or should I just cave and do the personal favor to secure a Kingston Hyper X?

Thanks in advance.

the big deal with OCZ is to ensure you get it on the stable firmware before using it

I have had a number of first gen Vertex's with zero issues

For basically the same price you can get an updated SATA3 SSD. I've seen quite a few SATA2 SSD's on sale lately... I think they are trying to clear out their old stock.

Not to say it wouldn't be a bad choice... but I would spend a little extra to get current technology.

I'm with Charlie on this one.

Those drives(ALL SF-1xxx based) go into what's called a "settled in state" after all physical space has been written to at least once over and there is far better available these days.

2 years ago?.. top notch speeds. Today?.. not so much and I would never recommend anyone choose a sata2 drive from any mfgr. Price difference is just too close between sata2 and sata3 to justify buying old tech. It's worth the upgrade just from the standpoint of firmware improvements alone.

Well again, I'm only basing this just on price. Shopping around for a decent SSD (with fabulous reviews) keeps pegging me in the $180+ price range for Kingston/Intel/Crucials.

The other cheaper ones like the Corsair 3 series, puts it at about ~$150 for a 120GB drive and while being SATA 3 and based on the SF2186 (?) it they still seem to have issues from my research.

With it being only a $100 After MIR, I didn't feel it was as much as a gamble, if the drive were to say last a year - versus $180 for a drive to last say 2 years, they break even.

Guess I'll suck it up and do the personal favor haha. Thanks for the feedback.

Instead of trying to find a particular brand/model, how about looking at the controllers? IMO all drives which use a particular controller are similar enough with each other as to be interchangeable.

This means yesterday you could have gotten a Patriot Pyro SE 120GB (Sandforce SF-2281 controller) for $120. :whiste:

Guess I'll suck it up and do the personal favor haha.

Our very own AnandTech gigolo? Is it strange to find myself jealous?

You missed a shellshocker yesterday at Newegg for a Patriot Pyro SE based in the on the Sandforce 2811. Same size, much better performance, and only $20 more after MIR.

You can pick up SATA III class drives in the $100 range now.

Vertex 2 makes sense for older systems with SATA II ports, but the price really needs to come down if they want to move obsolete inventory.

If you live near a Microcenter, they had a sale on crucial m4 128's for $150.

I'd avoid the drive. Vertex 2's have pretty bad reputations for spontaneous failure after 6 months. Search the web and you'll see. Even if the drive was 75 dollars I'd avoid it.

I'd go for an agility 3 of the same size and just pay the extra 20 bucks.

Just got myself burned by my Vertex, on top of miscellaneous problems with their firmwares. And its not the first time either an OCZ product is giving me troubles with reliability. With such an important component, I rather stick with a more reliable brand.

just keep in mind that you can reduce the burn severity by destructive flashing those Indilinx controllers back to life. Sad that you have to do that.. but at least you have the option to avoid RMA.

If you did throw in the towel on it?.. I may be interested in buying that headache from you. ;)
