OCZ Vertex 2 SSDs finally popped up at Amazon today.

50GB ~ $260
100GB ~ $481
200GB ~ $981

and Free Shipping.

Hard to pull the trigger at these prices, will be watching for promos in the coming weeks.

The F200 is much cheaper on Amazon @ 200GB. I almost bought one... but after the Vertex LE, I decided to wait a generation until I start replacing SSD's with newer technology.

I'll pull the trigger at $2.00/GB, but $4.81/GB is just insane. I thought prices were supposed to come down over time, not up?

I could be considered an outlier.... I'm really quite happy with my hard drive performance. Currently using a 1.5TB WD GreenPower drive for my OS. Rarely do a full shut down or reboot, mostly just put the system to sleep when it's not being used.

Now, for a laptop, having an SSD would be much better I think. Not sure what battery life improvement you get, but I'd imagine it's something. Plus, you shut down and start up much more often, so performance there would be noticeable.

Whether laptop or desktop, the ssd is the best visible upgrade one can get for a system. Its a huge visible difference all around.

It's curious how the human mind works ... I would never have bought my G2 SSD for $230 at launch (it was that cheap then), but I just happened to have some extra money in a Paypal account from selling a first gen iPhone on eBay. That $230 then seemed like a steal...

Don't regret the purchase one bit. I can't say the same for some recent software purchases though...

Paying ~$5.00/GB for MLC SSD is redonkulous!

If you're going to shell out the money, man up and go with SLC for maximum performance! Even if there isn't as much density (i.e. 32 or 64GB), get a couple and RAID-0 those suckers for a really satisfying MUA HA HA moment! 😀
