OCZ Summit

Does anybody know when will OCZ Summit SSD series come out ? I read before that they were supposed to come out at the end of April.

Word on the street is it is stalled indefinitely.

It falls behind in virtually every benchmark other then sequential vs the Vertex.

Right now if you have the cash, it's $699 at the egg for the Corsair P256, oddly cheaper than the Indilinix 256GB derivatives right now, even though the Summit was at one point conceived to be the higher end product.

Any insight into the intrinsic difference(s) between the two controllers that created this situation where the Vertex outperforms the Summit?

Considering how poorly the Vertex performed at anything but sequentials until Anand got involved in the firmware-update loop it is kinda surprising how much potential was hidden in the Indilinix controller that was unlockable with the right firmware.

Perhaps Summit's controller (that's the samsung controller isn't it?) just needs time for the right firmware to debut?

Reviews for both products.

Company reps at the OCZ forums were stating that Samsung was not interested in firmware upgrades and that even if they could push the Samsung any faster they couldn't differentiate it from the Vertex.

On the OCZ forums I do detect a bit of resentment on the reps. It seems like the firmware is fully compatible with all of the Indilinix-based controllers and they've banned discussing about the competing products. They've done all the grunt work and I'm guessing they've gained very little to show for it--and the new OEMs are shipping with the newest firmware too.

Aren't samsung drives more power effiicent? I kinda liked the power draw SSD tests more than the speed ones since I'm mainly interested in purchasing an SSD for a notebook.

Wow, based on that corsair review it looks like the samsung controller is a step back from the indilinx controller. Those random writes just sucked compared to the vertex.

Well, I think thats cause samsung designed their drives for notebook use rather than desktop use.

Won't be long...looks like it may debut slightly higher than the Vertex.

120GB Summit is $380 at ecost vs $310 for the Vertex.
