OCZ PSU Died. Any Suggestions for a replacement?

Hey guys.

My OCZ PSU recently died on me. It was the following model:

It should still have around 4 months of warranty on it so I have contacted OCZ to see how they will handle an RMA.

Worst case scenario, they will not replace it and I will need to buy a new one. So in the meantime, I want to shop around for a new PSU for around 100 bucks that will power the rig in my signature.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Also, I currently am using my old Antec Truepower 480W to power my rig. Is there anything I should be careful about using an older PSU? I do not want to hurt my components or the old PSU by using it with newer more power hungry hardware. I must note though, that I have been playing long hours of World of Warcraft with no problems at all on this old PSU - she is a champ!

I have the M12 and have been really happy with it.

Also.. I had an OCZ Powerstream a while back and it was one of the best PSUs I have owned.

This. Heck, you can even go with a 450watt if you don't plan on getting a more power hungry gfx card.

On and off for probably 5 or 6 years. It used to power a Athlon X2, 6800GT, and two hard drives.

It is now powering the rig in my signature, and honestly, I have not had any problems with it. Obviously, I had to use the PCI-E adapters that came in the box for my GTX 260, since this PSU only has 2 Satas and a bunch of Molex connectors.

Antec had issues with bad capacitors several years ago. I can't remember if it affected the original TruePower line or not, though. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't trust it for the long haul.

Hell, like TemjinGold mentioned, you could get away a 500W or so from a solid PSU maker if you don't think you'll ever get a real power hungry video card. Anything from Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, etc. should be a safe bet. There are other decent brands too but the different models may be hit or miss.

All that said though, you should have no worries using that old one until the replacement shows up. :thumbsup:

Truepowers weren't as bad as Smartpowers, but still it's a freaking old psu with some known failures. I'd definitely grab a nicer psu that you can use for a future build.

I'd buy another OCZ before an Antec.

The only OCZ PSU I have ever had die on me (probably built ~10 systems with em - really good bang for the buck a lot of the time) died siliently.

Every thread I see about antecs dieing tend to involve a bang and lots of pretty sparks/fireworks.

I'd trust 80% of Antecs over OCZ PSU's. Its the quality of the OEM making the actually PSU that matters. Antec has been improving lately after a few years of being hit or miss.

In my last build I had a single GTX 470, a 965 OC'd to 3.8 GHz and like 5 hard drives, 5 case fans and water cooling, and bought a 700w OCZ Modxtream (for like $30 on grand opening sale, couldnt resist price) and It shut down on me all the time.

When I built the 1090T system, I added a 2nd 470 too and a XFX 850 with the same motherboard, no Issues at all anymore.



Now for the OP, the True Powers were better than the Smart Powers hands down. The smart powers had the cap issues... But I still have a 380w Smart Power from 2004 era that still works and was used daily up until a few weeks ago in an old build. I decided to throw it out.

I think you should do the same (or sell it for $15 if you really want to) and get something decent.

The XFX 650w can be had for $70 ish and are awesome. (Seasonic made)

It can happen to just about any brand PSU.

After about 5 months of mild use, my (Seasonic built) Corsair 400CX power supply just made a loud pop sound and quit working last night. Not too happy, but what are you going to do? It's got an average of 5 eggs rated by 600 consumers on newegg.

Hmm funny cuz I'd buy 50 antecs before an OCZ, especially now that christoph is a product manager for antec Nothing about OCZ screams anything but mediocre since all they currently have are decent sirfa designs and nothing else. Meanwhile Antec has some awesome seasonic and delta built units.

I see you have a 700 watt at the moment though, so not sure if a 600 watt will suit your needs or not. They do have a 700 watt on sale too though, just not the extra 10% off.

Just to keep you all updated on the situation:

I packed up my old 700w PSU since it was still under warranty, and I sent it to OCZ. They processed it in and decided to replace it with a different model (higher wattage, same series). I had this:
