I usually stick to Earthwatts, Seasonic, and (the good) Corsairs when recommending builds, but the OCZ Fatal1ty 500W is $45 AR -- $15 less than the second-price-tier Earthwatts at the moment ($60 AR for 650W), and it gets good Newegg reviews.

Is it recommendable from a quality standpoint? If so, how optimistic do you think the power rating is? My gut says no to a Phenom II X4/GTX 570 for this PSU (~360W Crysis but ~450W Furmark). But would 6970 and under be ok?

450W available 12V power. I'd say it is rather over rated, but it should still be enough.

When my PSU died, I used a Fatal1ty 550W on my sig rig with no problems. It ran great while I waited for my Corsair HX750 to arrive. The 5870 is efficient, so the comparison might not help you out.

I am a Hoo too!

Yeah we haven't got much to cheer about during Bowl game season...just biding my time until lacrosse and baseball season start. Amberclad is another HOO on this board.

No, that helps quite a bit. The 5870 is on the level of the 6970. So this tells me the 500W is quite likely good for anything up to the 6970's draw.
As I rarely suggest anything higher than the $280 6950, this means the $30 AR Earthwatts 380W and the $45 Fatal1ty 500W would cover 99% of my suggested builds.

Of course just as I post this the Earthwatts go on sale for 10% off. Now the Earthwatts 500W is within $7.50 of the Fatal1ty.
