Hello all!

Putting together my first rig tonight....thought all was going well, turned it on, all the fans turned on....thats about all I can say. The monitor turns on, then a second later it goes to idle mode.

At first i was thinking the video card wasn't compatible [x800 pro, his] but now i've talked a few people who have that combination working fine... so I'm pretty sure it must be the ram :(

Anyone hear of any problems running ddr 3500 with the msi k8n mobo?

I had a buddy who is a bit more...knowledgable come over and try and see what I had done wrong, but after an hour of looking thru it, we are still getting the same results.

amd 3000+
ocz 3500ddr
msi k8n
74 raptor
x800 pro, HIS not ATI [problem?]

Any suggestions?

Well, first thing that I would try, if it hasn't already been tried, is to reseat the ram. If you're using more than one stick, try individual sticks. Be sure to try various slots on the board........as the ram might need to go in a specific slot(check the mobo manual to see if they recommend anything like that). Also, what power supply do you have? If it's a small one, you might have enough juice to turn on the fans but not enough to power everthing. Try to get it to boot with the bare minimum stuff which would be cpu, ram, and video card. See if you can get it to go. Then slowly add pieces in and see where you have your problem. Also, you might try a different video card just to be sure that yours isn't DOA. Those are the first things that I would try. Good luck and keep us posted on what you find. :)

I try'd reseating the ram last night, but I did put it in the same spot...ill have to try differant slots tonight when I get off of work.

If I dont have access to another video card [all i have is my built in dell one...] any other suggestions?

The power supply is the 420w enermax noise taker.

Thanks :)

Well, does your knowledgeable friend have an extra video card? How about some extra ram? The only other thing I can think of is to have your friend bring his system over. Try swapping parts around and see what happens. Put your ram in his system and try it. Put his video card in your system(after putting your ram back in) and try it. That's always the hard part....having extra parts lying around to try when you have problems. If everybody had extra ram, hard drives, video cards, processors, etc......troubleshooting would be SO much easier. Just keep trying........you'll eventually find out what's wrong. If all else fails, take it to a shop and have them look it over. Nobody wants to have to resort to doing that but sometimes you just run out of options and time and it becomes more productive to do that rather than have a non-working system for days or weeks.

No problem. I like to "attempt" to help.....although often I'm not very good at it. :D

Oh, BTW.....what is your ram voltage set at? You might try upping the voltage on that a bit.....or playing with your RAM timings......try Cas 3 and set your timings a bit more loosely. Just some more things to try. :)

well I cant even get that far...still a dead screen. I tryed putting in a friends old video card and still nothing, no beeps, nothing at all. Think the ram or the video card slot is messed up....ive called MSI a few times now, only to wait on hold for 20+ minutes and then all I get is them asking me to leave a message....thoughts? Suggestions?

Send back the mobo for a replacement seems like the best option right now....

Well, it's entirely possible that it IS the board. Board manufacturers make such a high number that there are bound to be a few that fail. I would personally suggest taking it to a small computer shop....if you have one around. Check and see how much they would charge to check it out for you. As long as it isn't 40 or 50 bucks, you might try that approach. That way you would know for SURE that it was the board and not something else. If they want to charge you more than 20 or 30 bucks to check the board, I'd say forget it and just RMA the board back to wherever you got it from and ask for another one. If you have any "computer nerd" friends, maybe they could test the board for you. I agree that sending the board will probably be the best option.....so....if you decide to go on and do that, I wouldn't blame you a bit. I would personally want to know for sure that the board is bad but I could also see not spending money on something that is probably messed up when the money could be applied for shipping the product back(and that should be cheaper than $20 anyways).

Beleive we figured it out.

Finally got in contact with MSI, and the board cant support anything over 3500....but once again shouldnt it still make it to the bios?

it's interesting, because I had the same quesiton. The specs on the k8n say that it only supports up to ddr 3200, not 3500. I have the exact same question as to whether or not 3500 is supported at its full speed.
