oculus rift or samsung s6?

Oculus is a full VR experience, where you interact with your surroundings.

The Gear VR is a mostly stationary system where you stay in one place (or follow a predefined path). It is basically a demo for VR compared to the full Oculus.

With that said the full Oculus costs WAY more, and will need a pretty pricy gaming rig to run it. I have a Gear VR and it is a great way to enjoy cheap VR if you already have a Galaxy phone. I wouldn't buy a Galaxy for it though.

The Rift is $600 and needs a PC that's roughly $1000 or more.

The Gear VR is $100 and needs an S6 or Note 5. An S6 with a bad ESN (aka dedicated for the Gear VR) can be had for $200 or less.

The Rift will provide the better VR experience. The Gear VR is cord free and is good for "casual VR".

~$1600 (better experience) vs. ~$300 (satisfactory experience). Also depends what you want to do with it. Video will work great on both, but obviously look better on the Rift. Games will be better on the Rift without question. One of the coolest things with the Gear VR is watching movies laying in bed, but feeling like you're in a movie theater.

Ok. Good advice! I think I will get a cheap s6 like you said. Test drive vr until it matures and spend something worthy then.thanks!

At $600 and a May ship date for the Rift, I'd probably wait for the Vive, which currently looks more promising for full VR. I was hoping for a $200 to $400 launch price for the Rift.

The Gear VR is definitely worth considering if you have a Samsung Galaxy S6/Note 5 variant or don't mind getting one. Google Cardboard is also an option if you want a cheap entry into playing around with VR, though it's going to be more limited and the experience is dependent on the device you have (low DPI screens don't look great in Cardboard). It's also not comfortable for long periods, you can get eyestrain or headaches after a few minutes if you are sensitive.
