"We haven't announced the pricing quite yet," Mitchell said, responding to the most obvious question. But he did give us some clues.

It is going to be "a little bit more expensive" than the Gear VR, which is a $200 device. Other than that he refused to give any information about the pricing other than to say it would be "affordable."

"We do see VR as a mass market product, and we want to get there," he said. That won't happen if the price is too high.

Seems pricey when you consider that it's usage is tied to specific games that make use of it.

What do I know though? I used to spend hundreds on flight sticks and such for flight simulators back in the day.

True, and the screens wont last so long either before they degrade. But I guess we just ahve to buy version 2 by then :p

IF it works as well as promised on-paper, I'd happily pay 50% more than this for the first generation. It's a comparable device to a monitor IMHO.

As with everything else though, no disbursement of funds until reviews

looks like they may be including audio hence some of the price creep.

i'm pretty torn between vive and rift. guess i'll wait for the reviews of the unit/games.

I find the comments about the pricing utterly ridiculous.

Why?

Just over some three years ago, not that even a VR device with the Rift's (or Steam's Vive or Morpheus whatever) capabilities was available, the available devices back at the time were in the multiple 1000s of dollars range.

Now, the Rift and similar devices will be priced $300-ish which is the price of a high quality 144hz monitor. People don't have a problem shelling out hundreds for a large monitor, or they don't have a problem shelling out MUCH more for triple monitor setups or whatever.

But the $300 for the Rift are a problem? How so when VR goggles certainly can give you a better immersion and experience than....say...three monitors..and compared then would actually cost only a fraction of the price of such a setup? (Or as mentioned for about the price of a quality monitor).

Sorry..does not compute.

Yup..I wouldn't jump on the Rift yet. The exact specs are not out yet as far as I read. Vive looks good too.

The monitors would be more useful for things such as photoshop editing.

Not necessarily. If you're not using the VR capabilities of the OR, you should be able to turn of the head tracking and 3D effect and simply use it as a normal HMD.

Of course a normal monitor is still better for things where you need to be able to see your surroundings (like the keyboard, papers etc)

Shoot, I dont know. I suppose it boils down to content. Both VIVE and Oculus are impressive pieces of hardware. I have the room for lighthouses or whatever they are called...so Ill probably be more keen on HTC's foray.

I bought one of the DK1s when they first came out. Since I tried it I am completely on board with this technology. I, however, am willing to wait for the perfect experience. I don't quite care to be an early adopter. The DK1 was a great proof of concept, but having to fiddle with lens sizes, adjust the lens distance, and then it still be blurry sometimes was a PITA. It took nearly 10-15 minutes to get it just right and then if someone else wants to use it, you've got to do it all over again.

I'd gladly pay $400+ for the equipment, but I need plenty of games to play. I have a bit more trust that Valve can get massive developer support compared to Oculus. I think Oculus may have waited too long. They've had 2-3 years to get a commercial product out and even billions of dollars over the last 6 months. They seem to have missed their chance to be the only novel gadget on the market when they release.

Not sure which brand I'll end up buying, if the Vive gets more game support through the Valve/Steam connection, that could be the route to go. But the final Rift is going to be a spectacular device.

I have been itching to get the Rift, but didn't feel right buying a pre-release device now, when it will pale in comparison to the final consumer product. I'll be getting whichever one the better tech journalists end up labeling the best on the market (the Vive and Rift should be available around the same time, I don't expect more than a few months delay between the two releases - the Vive is currently still slated for "Fall").

While I love my 3x1080p gaming experience, I'll be able to drive better visuals in a more immersive experience at the resolutions these VR devices use. Some games I don't expect to translate well simply due to controls: racing seems SO perfect for a VR system, but working with a wheel and shifting (be it gated, sequential, or paddle) without seeing any of it, could get tricky, especially with a billion buttons on the higher-end simulation equipment mimicking the billion button F1 wheels.

Not me really because of something that nobody mentions. If you have a nice 5.1 setup you run your games through but you use a VR headset and turn your head, you lose the usage of your system since the front won't be the front speakers any longer. Headsets aren't always something I prefer using.

If I had a 144hz monitor I'd use it for everything. If I had 3 monitors I'd use them for everything. This? You use for what supports it only.
