Definitely both companies have decided to skip 20nm altogether.

Oh, they have? I wasn't aware that you had definite special insider access to make such an absolute claim.

It is time to kill this myth. Show us your arguments. Not a single one has passed the smell test.

Maybe 20nm is rather messed up and they can produce a more economical (from a profit perspective) 28nm midrange card for now, and figure they might as well release it now while they wait for 20nm ramp.

Who knows.

They are based off rumors, which they think are 100% correct.

:DKarRLitos, your son looks GREAT. Get him started on abcmouse.com. Excellent webpage that 3 of my grandchildren use.

Very interactive. I bet he'll be the only child with a quad R9 290 rig!:awe:():):biggrin:

So AMD is pulling an Nvidia ish move here.

Can't say I am too happy about it.
But its business, its my fault of expecting a business to be "Noble". They are all the same.

Sigh.
Now if some of the 290Xs (including mine) can be unlocked to this new card, I might be a little bit happy.

But I wouldn't hold my breath.

HUH?
Not exactly.

We all knew that the gtx480 was cut down from the start. We all knew that the original titan/780 was cut down, right from the start.

If AMD has been selling cut down chips in the 290x, then its completely different than anything Nvidia has done. Not only was it not known, people from AMD have came out to proclaim that the 290x is a full chip. A full chip with nothing disabled. People were digging into the layout and thought that the chip must be cut down with disabled parts when AMD came out and flat out denied it.

So if this turns out to be true, it will be unlike anything Nvidia has done.

But that doesnt mean i wont find it interesting. I mean, I would love to see some new GPUs from nvidia and AMD no matter how they come to be. Just thinking though, if the 290x was soo power hungry that it had to have parts disabled I wonder what they could have done to get past that?

Do you guys think they have a way better cooling solution now or they really could have got more out of an already mature 28nm silicon? Could this new card come with a closed loop cooling solution like the x2? If so, i bet it be priced exactly like the 780ti. $699ish. I also bet it will be faster too. Even if it is all around 5-10%. With a water cooling it would be quite and an cooler that the 780ti. But would it be practical at a 699 price point?

This all could be fake, but its got me wondering. I really fell for the Hawaii being a cut down chip the first time. I was really leaning towards the idea.....until AMD denied it, then i through it out and never thought of it again

You don't need insider information to see what's been happening lately. ;)

Maxwell on 28nm, Hawaii refresh 28nm, this late! Releasing on TSMC 20nm makes no sense when finfets are around the corner.

People should be very careful before jumping to conclusions with any new AMD cards as 8 Pack was still quite vague in the thread when we were debating with him.

For all we know the next AMD card will be a 290X with 8gb of VRAM.

The 20nm FF processes that is mislabeled 14nm is targetted for low power only. The 20nm planar is better for desktop GPUs.

The question is rather, who can afford 20nm.

I've been searching for a reason for the 290X 8gigs to be EOL'd before they were released. Maybe this is it?

Water cooler 290 Ultra with 8GB ram and higher clocks and streaming processors?

But seriously, its not going to happen as AMD don't have such a card. The next thing they release will the the 390x and 390 in Autumn.

Confirmed: AMD to launch Hawaii XTX GPU

Breaking news: we have just confirmed that Hawaii XT is not the full chip. AMD is working on a new SKU with Hawaii XTX processor!

Hawaii XTX, the first GPU with 3000+ cores?

All those rumors, blurry die shot comparisons and hundreds of comments were correct (and apparently I was not).
Hawaii has more cores than advertised. Hawaii XTX variant was a well-kept secret, until now…

After 8 Pack’s revelations we started digging and asking, until we are able confirm that this information was true.

While the exact specs are unknown, we have a good reason to believe that XTX has 48 Compute Units. That’s one more in each Shader Engine (there are 4). The number of ROPs will likely be the same (64), but TMU count will increase to 192.

AMD Hawaii GPU variants

Hawaii XT

Hawaii XTX

SKU
Radeon R9 290 Radeon R9 290X Radeon R9 295X?

Compute Units

Unified Cores
2560 2816 3072

TMUs
160 176 192

ROPs

AMD Radeon R9 295X

It’s still a mystery, what is the model name of a new Radeon card. Is it Radeon R9 290XT or R9 295X? It’s really hard to say, but 2×5 parts already exist in slower segments.

The card we are now going to call Radeon R9 295X, would compete against GeForce GTX TITAN BLACK and GTX 780 TI, with a good chance to beat both. Hawaii XT GPU was already better in 4k benchmarks. 128 Stream Processors more will most likely put an end to GK110 domination.

Radeon R9 295X will most likely only be available with custom cooling solutions (no reference cooling).

Now AMD please, don’t make it cost more than $650

KnCMining got the first 20nm chips along with Qualcomm. Bitcoin/Scrypt mining companies are rushing to 20nm because they can easily charge the margins required for the cost/yields of the process.

Graphics cards consumers are much more sensitive to price

The rumor makes sense, it never really jived that there were all these numbers 1 short of a typically rounded GPU number. 290x with 44 CUs, 176 TMUs. The 290 had rounder numbers which was also strange.

if Dave Baumann says Hawaii is full chip... what are the chances :hmm:
