OC'ing XFX 6950 1GB using afterburner, do I really need powertune 20%?

Hey peeps,

So I started tweaking my non-reference XFX 6950 1GB and to my luck I could implement voltage control through MSI AB which is surprising since its non-reference. Anyway, the card went to 930/1300 at stock voltage and is now sitting at 970/1300 at 1.188 vcore. I've been hearing about OC'ed cards throttling specially when OC'ed in order to maintain their TDP envelope and I don't want that to happen. Can I implement powertune without using overdrive? If not, can I use overdrive to ONLY implement powertune and AB for voltages and clocks? Will they play nice together??

You have to use CCC and Overdrive to access Powertune. But yes, you should be able to use Overdrive just to set Powertune limits and use Afterburner to overclock, as that's what I'm currently doing. But there is always the possibility of issues arising, so just try it and see how it works for you.

btw, should I just shoot for high OC's or unlock the card? Is bother possible? Any idea of what is the max safe voltage for those babies?

Exactly which card do you have? Does it have dual bios? I'm not familiar with any 1gig cards that do, but I'm not certain about every one.
