Using ATI Tray Tools to OC my x800xl. only getting 4910 on 3DMark05 on stock settings and I want to push it a bit more.

Right now, TT is saying
407.45 core
510.55 memory

where stock is 400/490

my temp reads
75 GPU
57 ENV(iornment)

no artifacts so far. but... how far can I go while still in yellow? (green, safe; yellow, meh; red, OCed to the max, better be careful with stock cooling!)

well generally the highest ive seen is only about 10% the x800xl's arent known for their ability to overclock, theyre pretty poor at it

alot of cards dont even muster anything over 430Mhz, does your card have an additional power connector? if it does that gives u a little more juice to oc further, but you still wont be going much beyond 10%

jus oc it 5mhz at a time, then look for artifacts using ATI tools tester and also loops of 3Dmark

yea, I have the powercolor version which does have the additional power connector. I also hear they were bad at OCing, but I have it, and I want to keep it primed for these new games coming out and not have to upgrade already (<year old). Ill run 05 wit these settings and see if I can break 5500. If not, another 5mhz like you said

wow, you gotta love the stock cooling on these powercolors. 50GPU, 49ENV... 1C above enviorment idle! I don't know about anyone else, but I think that's amazing. Anyways, pulled off a 5009 with 407/510... so if that's OCed by 7/20 and I only got a 100pt 05 increase... i need another 30/95 OC to get 5500 on 3DMark05 :(

Don't know how your temps are that low, I have the same card and I get close to 80 C under load at stock settings.

You guys all need a Arctic Silencer 5 rev. 2 :Q

X800XL:

idle: 38c
Load: 54c

And thats with my huge 450/575 Overclock!

Wow...and I thought my X800Pro would be soundly beaten by an X800XL. I easily get 5500 in 3DMark 05. When I overclock to the max, I get around 5800. At 5500 I'm running the card at 540 core and 1020 memory with the default 12 pipelines open. I wish I could unlock the remaining pipelines!

5800 with a X800Pro is a really good score, but you pushed your card about 100Mhz above stock so its quite possible.
To the OP X800XL's are poor overclockers so dont expect much.

those things overlock like theyre on steriods though, might only have 12pipes but you can crank them hard

OP, try getting a one of those VGA silencers, or a Zalman VF700. that will bring temps down further, though i dont think itll improve the OC much

So how much can I expect out of my core? I think my memory is holding me back; it's 2.0ms rated at 1000mhz...

the 2ns stuff on my 6800gt wont go much past 1.1Ghz

540 is pretty good already from 475mhz stock is it? you might be close, but alot get 550Mhz plus. ive seen a couple of 560s. and of course if you go water cooling you volt mod and go further!

better on the normal settings, but crank up the AA and resolution and the 16 pipelines shine right through

So is 75 too high under load? what temp should I stop overclocking at?

I would, but I upgrade my GPU every year or so, so modding my existing would just be pointless if I get a next-gen vid card next december. Might think of ducting directly to my stock cooler, though, using a slot

hehe! holy sh1t man, you basically underclocked and your overheating! :p

OK: on 425/540 from stock settings, I get an artifact after 250-some seconds. good enough to up the ante more? (still at 75 load)

These are the default settings, I can get the core to 420 with no artifacts, maxes out at 85 C.

OC'd mine yesterday with ati tray tools. my temps don't go over 65. I have an AGP sapphire. I just crank up the fans to 100% over 55C. keeps it quiet at idle and cool under load.

Idle 50c
Load 65c

alright, my top speeds were getting artifacts all over the place after I let it run the simulator alone for 10 minutes, and then checked for artifacts. reset to stock and am using the auto-overlock. Don't like doing it this way, but yea... X800xl DONT oc well

I wouldn't bother OC'ing a X800 XL as in general they don't overclock well.

You're right about that. I think i'm lucky to get the OC that I did. maybe an aftermarket cooler would help, but i rather spend it on a zalman for my cpu wich runs too hot with the stock cooler.

yea, beginning to realize that. using ATT's "find max: MEM or GPU" I get 428/508.

history:
let auto run on "max for GPU" until 430, then did memory
got 508 for max
then ran gpu again
ATT clocked it back down to 428

goddamit. guess I'll have to upgrade sooner than I thought

EDIT: after posting this, i applied new clock speeds, and BAM! artifacts all over my screen. text was a jumble...looked liek japanese kinda. reset to stock, restarted, vowing never again to try to overlock this GPU if all I can get is a meesly 10/30 boost. F that

it also looks like your temperatures are way too high. what kind of cooling you got?

with no special cooling I over clocked to 425/550 and bumped my 3dmark05 up from 4600 to 5500. So I'm thinking great... I've got some good scores out of this, but when I run my game tests looking for better frames and I found at best I was getting an extra frame maybe two on BF2... I think we're pretty much screwed on OCing the card. It's a cheap card for a reason. I'm still impressed by getting a card that is sometimes almost half the price of the 6800GT.
