A friend has an overclocking problem. He?s running a Venice-core 3200+ E3 at 2.5GHz on stock cooling. VCore is 1.375. RAM Divider is 3/4. HT is 250 with 10X multi. If he tries to go past 250 mhz, he gets a garbled BIOS on start-up. I told him his voltage may be a little low, so would increasing it help? Also, he?s on stock cooling (may get better cooler soon), so what?s a safe HTT/VCore limit?

Yeah you want to raise the vcore up...getting a aftermarket cooler also helps alot...what is his goal?

2.7GHz or so (which will basically equal or beat FX55 with 2x cache). I think for that 1.45-1.5V VCore is needed, along with a FP64 Pro.
Btw he has an EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra, which is a good OCing board.

He needs to up the voltage. As long as his temps are fine he can keep on going up. He may be able to hit 2.7+ without needing an aftermarket cooling solution if the temps are good, only way to find out is to try it.

edit - regarding the title, it's not an overclocking problem. The problem is a misinformed idea of overclocking ... just get your mate to read this guide by zebo.

Yeah cause my friend also has a 3200+ and he ran it at 2.8GHz(prime for 21 hours before error...with stock cooler)

I dunno. Ive owned 4 different 3200 venices. All 4 maxed out around 2.6ghz no matter how much voltage. So it could be hitting its max. Although that vcore is really low as others stated. You can go up to 1.55volts or so no problem. If you really want high oc's though, youre gonna have to go opteron.
