Basically what the title says...

I just got my motherboard back from an RMA, and its time to OC some stuff. My E6550 is still with stock cooling, but the thermal compound is fairly good stuff. What can i expect to achieve? 3.0ghz or more?

Voltage is definately changeable b/c its at 1.1V right now. Specs in sig if you need more info.!

Thanks

I got 3.5G with a Freezer 7 Pro, my bro hit 3.5G with his stock cooler bit his tempes were a bit high for my liking.

What temps would you guys consider good?

Mine runs at about 45º while running Folding At Home... so i guess thats about full load.

Is that high? Where do i want to stay below with an OC?

I think most overclockers are comfortable keeping it under 60, while some venture as high as 70. Supposedly the higher temperatures can shorten the lifespan, but I think the general idea is that if you keep the temps under 60 and the volts reasonable as well, the lifetime of the CPU is still longer than your system upgrade cycle anyway.

Thats what i thought, well i stopped folding for a bit to let it cool down to get an idea of the core temps..

SpeedFan is reporting:
System:-65º
CPU: 45º
AUX: 25º
Core 0: 34º
Core 1: 37º

Those seem pretty good to me... though the negative is a little confusing

IMHO, use coretemp. I've never had much luck with speedfan.

At 3.5G mine never went above 52c at full load during orthos, superpi or anything else I threw at it.

As far as hitting over 450fsb, IMHO that heavily depends on your board and ram. I tried some OCZ platinum and had a hard time getting mine to run 400 let alone 450, as soon as i switched to Buffalo Firestix or crucial ballistix I had no issues at all booting right up at 500fsb.

I'm currently running my system at 3.5 at 1.3 vcore and ~30C idle and ~52C Orthos load. Folding@Home SMP Client load is around ~40C unless it's hot in the room. I've been able to get it to 3.6 at around 1.4 vcore but it was that stable with Orthos so I just settle for 3.5 :]. I think you should be able to get it to 3.0 easily on the stock cooler. I have a Zalman 9700LED so I guess that helps a lot.

Some specs just in case:
Asus P5B Deluxe
Corsair 2gb TWIN2X2048-6400
Corsair HX520

Alright, i gave it a shot today and here is what i got.

375x7=2650.. Its not bad, but its not a huge OC. I didnt want to push it much since its on stock cooling, but by reseating the CPU with less thermal paste the temps dropped significantly. Under full load the CPU is running at 42º right now...

I'll probably go for more later.

Think its possible on standard cooling? I know my RAM can handle it, and the motherboard can too so it all comes down to heat. Forgot to mention before the vcore is at 1.2 so there is plenty of flex there if needed

I've got a conservative OC of 2.8Ghz... i'm on an intel bonetrail motherboard (i.e. X38) on water cooling. under full load (i.e. seti running on both cores), my temps are 54C for core 0 and 49C for core 1... my voltage is at 1.3500v... these numbers are taken from Core Temp 0.96.1

and i'm running on Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

When I initially got my E6550 I thought I had a bum chip as I had a hard time getting it past 360 or so FSB. After switching from OCZ to Buffalo ram, it booted straight into windows at 500fsb and i've never looked back.

Ive only had a few problems with OCing so far. I think i had it set to 475x6 and when Vista started loading it just froze. I would assume thats what you mean by not getting past the certain FSB.. i'll give it a shot tomorrow.
