What motherboard do you have?
Depending on the motherboard and your RAM, there are different ways of overclocking.
The first is to increase the FSB (Front Side Bus). This is the speed that your memory will talk to the CPU (or a ratio of). The second is to increase the multiplier. You can also do a combination of these. Generally, overclocking via FSB will give more of a performance increase than just the multiplier. I try to go as high on FSB as I can, then once I hit a ceiling with the FSB, increase the multiplier until I hit the ceiling of the CPU itself.
On my Epox 8RDA+ (nForce 2 chipset), my Tbred B 1700+ is currently at 205MHz FSB (default is 133) and 10 multiplier (default is 11), for 2.06GHz (default CPU speed is 1.47GHz)
Of course, each inoividual processor is different, some will get higher than others, some won't.
