OCing 2500+ on an abit KX7-333

So today I replaced my old XP 2100+ palmino with a new Barton 2500+. It boots fine at the standard speed, 166x11, but when I boosted the FSB to 200 it wouldn't post. After some experimentation, the highest it will post at is 190, and seems stable. I tried raising the CPU voltage, even to 1.8 for one try, but regardless the CPU wouldn't boot past 190.

Are there any bios settings I need to change for the processor to reach the golden 200 FSB? I'm using 1 512mb stick of samsung PC-2700, and if you didn't see in the header, an Abit KX7-333mhz mobo.

your problem is the memory, i just o/c'd my barton to 214 with kingston hyper x in dual channel pc3200. trust me, the problem is the memory.

So is samsung just not very good OCing memory? I was under the impression that it was fairly high quality.

Your KX7-333 uses the Via KT333 chipset which has no 1/6 divider so your AGP & PCI will be running way out of spec and hard drive corruption may happen at high FSB.

My kt333 board the Asus A7V333 won't run stable above 184FSB and won't post above 192FSB.

If your Barton is locked this could limit your overclock.Did you try raising your multiplier?

CPU is locked :( but no suprise there since it's from newegg.

What's that about hard drive corruption? Never heard of that happening before. It didn't want to post at 190 when I tried to reboot a few minutes ago but I raised the RAM voltage up a notch and it seems stable now.

Anything else I can try? RAM timings are at their defaults.

Its not your mem. KT333 is garbage and won't go up past 175 or so...at least on my kt3 ultra (msi's kt333) it would'nt, with crucial 3200. Spend the xtra $62 to get a shuttle an35n which is a great nforce 2 mobo.

Honestly it isn't worth it for me to buy a new motherboard for 100mhz of speed. I guess I'll stick with this 2.1ghz OC, not too shabby.

yeah the kt333 is the problem sorry
i had similar results on an asus a7v333

you can search around google and try to unlock the processor
this might give you a few hundred more mhz, but it is risky and might not be worth the trouble

also you can get an nforce2 motherboard pretty cheap now if you wanna consider that option

good luck
and don't be ashamed of that oc it's still better than what you payed for

Haha not in the slightest. The $85 barton replaced a palmino xp 2100+ that I sold to someone for $60, which ran at 1.7ghz. So $25 for a 400mhz upgrade, not to mention a .13 micron core and double the L2 cache? I'm quite satisfied ;).

The KX7-333 can easily hit 200 Mhz FSB. I have one (KX7-333) that has been set and forget at 185 Mhz FSB for close to two years now. It tops out at 213 Mhz FSB. It is almost as good as the legendary KR7A-133 as far as high PCI bus speeds go. I have sucessfully run Prime95 for 12 hours at 200 Mhz FSB on my KX7-333, with no errors.

The biggest thing that holds many back on these boards is the RAM. These boards are very picky about what RAM they like, and in which RAM slot you use. They also like slightly higher RAM voltages. Try Kingston HyperX or Corsair XMS PC3200, and watch the FSB rise. No offense to Samsung, but it is NOT going to run 200 Mhz on a KX7-333/R. I had issues at only 172 Mhz FSB with Samsung PC2700. It was partly due to the aggressive timings of the board though.

I just had to post this to quell those who couldn't figure out how to OC their boards, and are now mad about it.

Note the board used in testing at 200 Mhz FSB

Also some excellent reviews giving top honors to this board....

KX&-333 reviews, most of them award KX7-333 top honors.

Well I don't plan on buying any new ram, but either way isn't a 333 board incapatable with PC-3200?
