I'm debating on my next upgrade path. What is the difference in the two cpus listed above assuming they were both overclocked to around 3. 6? Personally I'd rather save some cash if its going to be minimal. I ll likely run at least one GPU client with the CPU.

Both only have four real cores; but i5's have no hyperthreading. With hyperthreading (and a sufficient overclock) comes the capability of running -bigadv WUs.
 
... and those -bigadv WUs have a very big bonuses - one WU may give 58K - 66K points in three days or less ... and that matters.
Two equal computers (i7-860 @ 3.0GHz, GTX460, 4 Gbyte RAM): The one with -bigadv WU: PPD of 33 476, the other one without -bigadv WU: 15 515 points. The latter one still had a "good WU" with a bonus.
