OCed AthlonXP mobile making funky sounds! Help!

Finally got my new system up and running. Unfortunately, I have not been able to OC my Athlon XP mobile 2400+ very high - i've reached my limit at 2.3GHz. At this speed, I have to use a whopping 1.8v for the core to get it stable, which runs at 55C under full load. For comparison, i can run it at 2.2GHz only using 1.675v stable, 49C full load. I can also pump the FSB up to 210 stable @ 2.3GHz. Since i'm running dual channel, it seems to help the performance a bit with the faster FSB. I can get timings of 2.5-3-3-7. Does anyone have any advice what I should run the processor at? Is 55C too hot?

One of my larger concerns is that when i'm running the chip at anything above ~1.8GHz, *something* in my case makes a very high pitched sound, which is pretty loud and gets on my nerves fast. I can't tell if its my power supply or processor, but it seems to be coming from the CPU area, which means it might either be the CPU or the capacitors next to the CPU. When I start using the CPU (game, prime95, sandra), the sound goes away, or makes a very quiet "chirping" sound. I don't know why this is happening, but it has be slightly worried (and annoyed). Has anyone else experienced this?

I can almost gaurantee you that your processor isn't making noise. While I'm not an EE, and I don't flip out all the time (teehee) I'd venture to guess it's capacitor whine from your motherboard or power supply. You say it sounds like it's coming from the socket area, that suggest the motherboard. But often the socket is so close to the PSU, it's hard to gauge.

I'd swap the power supply first. Then try dropping your CPU into a friend's computer.

Most likely your noise issue is coil whine. See if the coils around the cpu are making the noise. If they are....your out of luck, nothing you can really do about it. (sometimes a different brand power supply helps)

Is it safe for it to make this sound, though? I'm worried that i'm stressing the components too much, which is why its making this high pitched sound. I don't want something to blow up, lol.

Coil whine does not usually indicate something wrong, but I would still get another board as I could not stand the sound. What brand motherboard is it?

I did some research on coil whine a while back, in short mainboard manufacturers are using cheap coils that havent been tightly laminated hence you get this noise.

Only real options are to switch the board for another, hoping the next doesnt have poor quality coils, or change the board for another altogether.

Avoid Gigabyte nforce 2 series, they do use cheap coils.

Its a Shuttle 35N 400 Ultra. Has anyone else had this problem with it? Its not *too* loud, but just browsing the web, or doing something that doesn't use the CPU makes the whine appear. I believe Apple Powermac G5's have a similar problem, and people fix it with something called CHUD tools. Does anyone know what this is?

I have that exact same board and it make the whine as well. One workaround that's worked for me was a memory config change using wpcredit and wpcrset.
Ugh...can't find the guide for it, I'll edit once I find it.
