OC'd 1.6A or stock 2.4B??

Would a pentium4 1.6a oc'd to 2.4 ghz be better than a stock 2.4 ghz processor? I kinda figured a wider bus (150 vs 133) would help the 1.6, but I don't know.

The 2.4B would be better because it has the 533mhz FSB whereas the 1.6A only has the 400mhz FSB. For a little extra, though, you can get the 2.4C

The 2.4B would not only be better because of that, but because the 2.4 has the ability to make it to 3ghz easily...

A 2.4C on the the other hand will hit 3.5 with some nice cooling...

Cheers!

No, I had the 1.6a and just got the 2.4 from my dad. The 1.6 oc's to 2.4 easily and was wondering which one to keep.

Had to edit as i screwed up the first time(damn old laptop anyway). The 1.6 would be running a 600 fsb as opposed to the 533 of the 2.4, So it may run faster than the 2.4 at stock speed. Get the 2.4 and o/c it.

;)

Sell the 1.6 and get the 2.4

You will reach much higher clock speeds for a cheap price.

The 2.4B

But if you grab the 2.4 you can hit 3ghz or possilbly higher and have much better performance than both.

Yeah, I just wasn't sure. This 2.4 has a decent size coolermaster heatsink on it, but I can't find it on the coolermaster website. Hopefully that'll help it. So do I just bump the fsb up to 167 and expect it to work?

i'll say the 1.6A then. the overclocked 1.6A will be at 600FSB while the 2.4B is at 533FSB. But if you overclock the 2.4B, that's another story;):)

That was my logic. Can anyone tell me how to identify this heatsink??

Don't even worry about that heatsink... I was running a 167 FSB on a 2.4@3ghz for a friend... 100% stable on the retail heatinsk and fan...

:D

Get the 2.4

Wow... a strong lean toward the 2.4... now is windows xp gonna get mad at me for changing my processor? Or does that only happen with motherboard switches?

1.6A
16 x 150 = 2.4 GHz

2.4B
18 x 133 = 2.4 GHz

The 1.6A @ 2.4 GHz is faster do to the higher FSB

Get the 2.4

What kind of temps were you getting on that setup?? According to my bios and mbm, the 2.4 at stock is at 40C inside and 29C on pcb and 31 in the case. Under load (sandra burn-in) it went up to 53C inside, 40 on pcb and 33 in case. What should I expect at 3 ghz?

The overclocked 1.6A GHz would be faster but overclocks are never guaranteed and you might not even reach such a speed at all.

Get the stock 2.4B GHz.

Get the stock 2.4B GHz.

he said that his 1.6A easily hits 2.4GHz already

Never, and I mean NEVER buy a CPU expecting an overclock. Have some common sense for god sakes! I'm sick of saying this same sentence over and over again. Why would you set yourself up for disappointment with overclocking??

That would make a diff. wouldn't it?

no, the B signifies 533Mhz FSB
A has 512kb L2 cache, same as B since they're both Northwoods

When I buy an Intel CPU, I expect it to overclock well. Most Intel CPU's that I had ran rock stable when overclocked. The Intel chip has thermal protection circuit that provides thermal run-off of the CPU. The question is "WHY NOT?".

I run a 1.6A P4 at 170 FSB (2.72GHz). It is a 70% oc. The 2.53B runs well up to 3.2GHz, but I don't how well it will do yet until I finalize tweaking it. Percentage wise, it will be less than the 1.6A.

Other brand of CPU may not overclock well much above 5-7% because they were not as well designed thermally. Is this why you were disappointed with your past oc experiences?
