occasional choppiness in games

hello everyone,

i've had my system up and running for about 3 weeks now. once in a while, i experience choppiness in games. just wondering how to minimize this effect. i am playing at my flat panel's max res of 1280 x 1024 with no AA on. i'm playing far cry, doom 3, and half life 2. and they all seem to do the same thing. they'll run smooth for a while and then i'll get the occasional choppiness. is this due to the video card? do i need to disable more background services in xp? i hope it's not my power supply not giving the system enough juice. my voltages and temperatures seem to be fine. i assume running at 1280 x 1024 is not too much for my system. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks 🙂

by the way, i'm using the x-treme g type 3 drivers

Back your oc on the 6800GT memory down, that is my best guess. It can't take prolonged periods like that, drop it down to stock mhz so you can check, and if the stuttering goes away slowly work your way back up. Also, HL2 is occasionally choppy due to its auto save feature.

Have you run Prime95/Memtest86 a lot, the more I think about it the more likely it seems like other parts of your system could be at fault

Nice box, though!

Thats my $.02. 🙂

One thing that I have found was that in the case of EQ2, my hard drive was a factor in my game performance. Meaning the HD that my page file was located on. I noticed that when many of the stutters started to occur, my hd light was flashing pretty hardcore. What I did for a test was to take an old LVD/SE SCSI card (80mb throughput) card and put it in my system and attached a 18gig Ultra160 to it. After that I moved my page file from my main system drive to the SCSI drive. The difference for me was that I was moving the page file from a ATA133 drive with a 8 ms seek to a SCSI Drive with about 4.5 ms seek time. That made quite a difference in the stutter effect that I was having with my system. In fact, I was able to actually boost my settings some. (running 1280x1024 in "Balanced" mode, sans shadows, which is pretty impressive for a 9700Pro)

As an easier alternative, you could try using a WD 74gb Raptor. They have a 4.5 ms seek.

Just an idea.

okay, that's worth a try. i'll bring the video card back down to stock speeds and see what happens. also, i have run prime95 with no crashes, reboots, etc. thanks for the suggestions and compliments. 🙂

actually, i do notice that my hard drive led comes on when games stutter. getting a wd 74gb raptor is an expensive solution after i spent every cent on this new rig. i guess it's time to save up again. thanks for the advice 🙂

Try the downclock.
You dont need a faster hard drive.

Np.

I agree with it being an expensive alternative. I am broke myself, which is why I tested the theory on some retired server equipment that I had collecting dust. 😀
