Everyone once in a while when I start up my computer, I get vertical and horizontal lines all over my screen. Restarting fixes this, but I'm concerned why this is happening.

Sounds like your monitor might be going bad. Try connecting a different one to see if that resolves the issue. If not, it is most likely a video card problem. If that is the case, I would try reseating your video card and seeing if that fixes the problem.

As well as naters good suggestions I would also check the cable going from your monitor to your video card. If one or more of the pins in this cable are bent, I would (with a small screwdriver or other tool) VERY CAREFULLY bend the pin(s) back into a straight direction, it doesn't take much force to pop one of these off. Much more unlikely is a heat issue or driver issue, all else fails check that your video card's fan is working properly and is not clogged with dust and also try reinstalling/updating your video drivers.
