Ok I got a a little annoying overclocking problem. I just got a Gigabyte n650sli-ds4, E6300 and 4gb Patriot ps2-6400 ram which I tested up to 1000mhz stable and I'm trying to overclock the cpu.

Between 400-460mhz fsb I get the same problem. I can stress test both cores all I want, it passes with flying colors. The moment I go on the computer while stress testing and use it for a little bit BAM screen corrupts and crashes. I noticed that dragging windows on the screen causes it. Just several seconds of dragging a window all over the screen is all it takes to crash my pc.

Could the problem with my darn video card? It's a crummy Ati Radeon X300 which is about to get replaced with a 7900GT. Is there any way around this, I sure hope I won't have the problem with my 7900GT :(.

how so ? I doubt the gpu is getting stressed much if at all by dragging windows around lol. But mentioning all other components you have might be worth it. And you could just pop that 7900gt in, and if the problem persists, ask again :p

Is the pci express slot clock speed separate from other overclocks on this board? Have you checked temperatures of things, especially the video card?

I had an issue where i could pass Orthos for hours, but playing videos would cause BSODs.

Turned out on of my RAM dimms was actually dying.

If you haven't run Memtest for a while, try that.

And make sure it's Orthos blend you're running.

Also, it is possible maybe your VRAM is going?

Run some 3DMark, etc.

As long as I have orthos running and nothing else CPU extensive my pc can run orthos for HOURS, but if i start loading up apps to help stress the CPU(only during small ffts test) pc will crash. If I leave orthos alone during small ffts test it's fine if I do blend I have no problems what soever.

I have the same board, and I think its not that great a board for OC stability.

My 6420 maxes out at about 2.8.

you might also want to bump the SPP voltages cuz 4 sticks of OCed RAM can put some strain on the northbridge.

My board doesn't like increased NB voltages at all. Have RAM at 2.2, vcore at 1.4 for my 6420@ 2.8. Even with the slightest NB voltage bump, no post.

Can you run looped 3DMark01, *while* running Orthos? I find this combination to be valuable to stress-test the entire system, not just the CPU. If there are GPU problems (or PCI-E freq problems), or heat problems, or PSU problems, they can manifest themselves while doing these things.
