oc stability limiting factor

what is the ultimate limiting factor for stabilty when overclocking? is it architecture or thermals? for example... sb and sb-e will oc the same due to architecture or 4 core sb will oc higher due to less thermals vs 6 core sb-e. also... unlocked llano will oc same as fx4100 because 4 cores/threads or more/less due to different architecture?
