OC Questions from a Dabbler

I haven't been interested in overclocking my CPU since unlocking a Duron using the pencil trick way back when. Now, I've been using an AthlonXP 1600 for the last year without overclocking. Tonight, just out of curiosity, I went into the BIOS and bumped the multiplier up to 11 and 11.5 just to see what would happen. Nothing--no change. I restored the multiplier back to default, and then raised the FSB from 133 to 166. To my surprise, the computer booted up showing an XP 2100+! I did not change the voltage or any other settings, just the FSB. Questions:
1) Do first generation AthlonXPs need to be unlocked to change the multiplier?
2) Is the jump from XP1600+ to XP2100+ reasonable? Did I get lucky? Have I been a moron for not doing this a year ago?
3) The CPU temp according to EPoX's utility is 52 degrees Celsius, about 3 degrees warmer than before. Safe?

Mobo is EPoX 8KHA+ (KT266A) with 256MB of Samsung DDR2100 and 256MB of Infineon DDR2100.

TIA.

edit: I'm using the Volcano 7+ cooler. Picture of my PC's innards is in my sig. I've added another 80mm case fan right under the power supply. It blows outwards as a exhaust.

Yes..the first gen. XPs are multiplier locked. The mutiplier can be changed on Tbred Rev. B chips with the Nforce2 motherboards without having to manually unlock the chip.

Overclocking Database to see what other XP1600 users are getting.

Is the 52C under load or idle? If it's under load, then you are fine.

Thanks Weasel. The temp is with "standard" usage (browsing, email, word processing, image processing, but no games).
I will check the OC DB for comparisons.

52c should be fine since it's only 3c from your previous temps, the thing is who knows what the actual temp is so stability is the best indicator and your previous temp does serve as a good reference point. If your 1600+ Palimino is an AGOIA then 2100+@default Vcore was not uncommon (mine did it) though you may have to bump it a bit for high load stability, and IIRC they are multiplier locked. And of course you're a moron for not overclocking it before 😛 J/K seriously, now you get a nice speed boost when it's more needed for some games and such 🙂

Yes, me moron 😱

Vcore is 1.76 (default). If my memory serves me right, the CPU stepping is AROIA.

I had an AROIA that was good for 1.75ghz-1.775ghz too so that's a good stepping.
