How much difference would I see in SETI WU performance between:


1.4GHz Tbird @ 1.485GHz, 135MHz MHz FSB and 1.4GHz TBird @ 1.4GHz, 133MHz FSB? my computer isn't as stable as I want it to be and I'm thinking about putting my processor back to normal speed.


oh and my DDR RAM is in 2.0-2-2CL mode. Would it hurt to drop CL to 2.5?

 
the difference between 1.485 and 1.4 will be approx 5-10 min..... but dont drop that CAS... it will destroy your WU time. Hope this helped.
 
Well since you will be more stable then drop it down. Being that it is 85Mhz you may not notice that big of a drop. What is your system doing? How is your cooling. Boy this could turn into a topic for the OC fourm real quick! 😉
 
If stability is a problem then deffinetly dop the FSB it should only affect you for about a 5-10 minute increase in times. However, changing the CAS latecy will have a dramatice affect on your times. I haven't checked it out or anything but I would think up to a 20 minute difference could result from changing the CAS latency to 2.5.
 
Just for reference, I'm running at 1.4Ghz Tbird on an ECS K7S5A with DDR ram running at CAS2. My average time at 1.4Ghz was 4:42. My average at 1.45Ghz (138Mhz BUS - motherboard won't do anything higher) is 4:30. You'll lose maybe 1 WU per week by dropping it back to default speed, and system stability is probably worth it.

p.s. 1.485Ghz is actually a 141Mhz BUS.. 😉

Nope. 135x11=1485
 
Why run at a multiplier of 11? It would be faster at the same overall speed with a higher FSB and the default multiplier of 10.5. Of course, if you're not stable at even 135Mhz BUS speed, that may be a moot point.. 🙂 Try setting the multiplier back to 10.5 and see how high the BUS speed will go and still have a stable system. Once you find your best FSB overclock, then go ahead and see how high the multiplier will go without sacrificing stability...
