oc problem with ab and driver later pre 12.3 and 7970

hello,

I hope someone has an idea of solution for my problem.

My 7970 worked now quite a while very stable at 1200/1450 @ 1.181V with driver 12.4 and afterburner (ab) 2.1.

Since I installed the latest drivers 12.10 and ab 2.3 I got unforseen crashes in oc mode. I recognized that it doesn't matter what ab version I installed, but indeed it matters which driver version. the last one working well and stable with ab is 12.3 now, anyone past causes instability. This is kind of weird because 12.4 was stable before.

I do have all options for oc, but none is stable. Instability can be reproduced while oc active with the mouse hovering over the ab hardware monitor window. This causes screen tearings, flickering and grafic bugs like vram problems. gaming causes bluescreens after minutes.

First I thought my card is broken, but it is fully stable with 12.3 driver up to 1265Mhz, ab version doesn't matter, now running 2.3.

Thanks for any ideas!

I am 99% sure it's because you have unofficial overclocking set to 1(I think it doesn't work with recent drivers, atleast it did not for me, the exact same flickering that you described happened to me). You can set it to 2 but that will disable powerplay.

What I did is disable unofficial overclocking and now I am using trixx to set core/mem clocks and afterburner for monitoring.

So I believe it is a problem still not fixed with ab?
Maybe I have to try using trixx, though I didn't like it some time ago.

Thanks for fast info :)

setting unofficial oc mode to 2 solves the problem, yes.
Desktop core speed reduces now only to 500Mhz, not to 300. I think I can live with that.

what is trixx good for? doesn't look professional to me, no v control either...

hopefully unwinder brings powerplay back to life...

there is voltage control in trixx if you scroll a little down(I know its a silly little program), but you can set the clocks with trixx, close it, run afterburner and you should see those clocks and use AB for monitoring+voltage adjustments. The downside to this is that you have to run both trixx and AB on startup(at least I havent been able to save over-max clocks in afterburner but I am not sure if it is possible though).

what about the voltage?

unwinder says its a bug in drivers and amd will not fix it :( really?

ok, I found vcontrol in trixx .... thanks!

this workaround works, oc settings are loaded and powerplay works fine, too.

Why does unwinder cannot program it this way???

trixx looks horrible but works fine.

thanks again!
