I'm extremely new to overclocking (never overclocked anything before), just wondering to what speed can I overclock a P4 2.4 on say an Asus P4PE motherboard?
That depends on your cpu heatsink/fan and ram mostly. I have a 2.4b p4 and I got it to 2934mhz stable(163mhz fsb) with the retail cooler at 1.675volts. Just turn up the voltage in the bios .1 or .2 volts and up the fsb until it stops booting reliably. Also, you can turn up the speed your ram runs at for more performance as well. 2.8ghz @ 1.6volts is very easy to do with a 2.4b p4.
Ok, that encourages me. Is there a overclocking-for-dummies guide somewhere on the net, that shows "step-by-step" instructions on overclocking?.....All the sites I found only talk 'bout overcloking in the general sense. I know the theory behind overclocking....but not the practical implementation of it.

If you went too far while overclocking (ie. it stops booting reliably), wouldn't you damage the chip/motherboard? How, then, is it possible to revert back and expect the system to perform normally?
I know these are silly questions...but I'm planning on building a NEW system. Can't afford to experiment on a new system.
