Hi guys. I got an 805 for $130 shipped from compgeeks. Now I have an abit al-8v (945p). I am new to overclocking. I know I will be buying some ddr2. What steps do I need to take to achieve a good overclock (3.4) on stock cooling? Do I really need the ddr2 667? Thanks for the discussion.

Stock cooling might not be enough for 3.4ghz, Smithfields put out a lot of heat. You don't need DDR2-667, 533 is fine. Just make sure you use a ram divider that prevents your ram from running too high over it's rated speed, and start increasing the FSB. 170mhz FSB will put you at 3.4ghz. Make sure you keep your load temps in the mid 60's or less, or you'll start throttling.

Well, what kind of aftermarket cooler are we talking about? I am from the house of amd, and I run a 3800x2. I am building this machine to be a render node for my 3d work. All help is humbly appreciated.

You know I love my 3800, but at this price, $210 shipped chip and board, I can't resist adding some cheap nodes and making a small farm. I'll add another if they are sufficient.

How the setting is labled will depend on your motherboard, but it will be in the manual.

I recomend the thermaltake jungle 512, it works pretty well, as well as the big typhoon which is even better.
