I have
144 opteron (will be overclocked)
Epox EP-9NPA7I
ExtremeMusic soundcard
HIS 1950pro
2x512 Corsiar Value Ram
Vista

and i just purchased 2x1024 OCZ Value Ram

I only use computer for WOW and downloading music (i dont multi-task, I usually play wow with nothing in background)

If I overclock my opty 144, is it better to stay with 2gb or do 3gb?

If you are going to do for 3GB just make sure that you try and find a stick that matches the speed and timings of your current 2x1 GB sticks. Otherwise you could be limiting your OC potential.

Aside from that you might want to research any potential issues with 3GB on your mobo as far as overclocking goes. I do not have first hand knowledge of your mobo.

i would throw it all in there

however if your value ram is limiting your overclocking headroom by a lot then you may want to ditch it.

i think that 3 gb is good enough to hold you over until you get a new platform, especially with vista.

since you have it and unless you plan on selling the 1GB, i would run put it in, run a divider on the ram, o/c the opty144 as high as safely cabable (i had mine @ 2.5GHz w/ stock V) and not worry about it. in all reality, you will probably never get into anything over 2GB, so you may think about selling it or upgrading one of your other machines.

sounds like a good idea. I have parts laying around, but my old Dell dimension 4100 is still holding up. I do have an ECS MB and Sempy 3000 and the 1gig with no home though.
