Help a fellow out won't you. I recently built a rig (hadnt thought i would want to OC) Picked lousy cpu XP2200+ to go with my asus a7n8x, 2x256mb 2700 Crucial, Geforce4 Ti4200 128mb, Antec SLK3700 case w/120mm fans in & out. cpu has retail HSF. Bios 1002a. when i go into bios iam at 133mhz. multiplier thingy is on auto. multiplier is at 12.5 (it is not highlighted) but I can't get at it unless i change multiplier thingy from auto to menu. Now I thought I read that a stock 2200+ was at 13.5x133 = 1795 which WCPUID confirms. If I go into multiplier the highest number is 12.5. Also the fsb choices seem to be only 3, 100, 133 or 166. Does that mean to OC I choose 12.5x166? From what ive read this chip OC's bad and I might not even get that much (12.5x166=2075) I read about people incrementing fsb by 5mhz steps or even 1mhz. Is this what they refer to as "unlocking" and this is only possible by physically altering the chip? Wow is that enough questions? can u tell i'm new at this? By the way I don't want to water cool. To me water and electronics don't mix. Also, should I change that other setting from Optimal to Aggressive (forgot what that setting is called)

You should be able to select some multipliers called 5.5/13.0 or something like that, and your chip being a XP2200 means is is a tbred, so those should be unlocked.

Regardless, I'd personally just start with the 12x multiplier and go up from there. Where have you been reading that your chip overclocks poorly? Maybe post the whole stepping of it here so we can help you get an idea of what it's gonna do.

If you choose these settings in BIOS they will give you much more control of what is going on:

CPU Frequency Mulitplier Setting - Menu

System Performance - User Defined

CPU Interface - Aggressive

Memory Timings - User Defined

Now you should be able to move the FSB 1mHz at a time, and change other settings.

If it's the original 2200+A then yes it's a dog when it comes to overclocking. Enter your CPU's data here to see what you have and post the info here if you need help.

One of the settings in your bios has to be set to menu to be able to raise your fsb in whatever increments you want. That's the best way to overclock and increase performance. You'll end up having to lower your multiplier. You may or not be able to do that without unlocking your cpu.
I set mine to aggressive, but use whatever gives you stability.

OK guys, Ive learned a little more in the past 24 hrs. I went ahead and tried a couple things.

Putting multiplier on menu instead of auto gives me choices. I boosted fsb to 166 and lowered multi to 11.5 giving me appx 1900 mhz. Everything seems the same temp wise so I'd say its stable. Boosted 3dMark2001 score from 10600 to 11800. One thing however, the highest multi is see is 14 (someone said 17). I'll look again. Also found out by changing sys perf from aggressive to user defined I can increment fsb by 1mhz steps.

Like a blockhead, I didnt check the numbers on the cpu before I installed it and I'm not going to pull that hsf off unless I really have to. Someone said If I look in WCPUID I could tell if I had a Tbird A or B. They said if the Family, Model, Stepping was 6-8-1 it was a B. Because mine is 6-8-0 its an "A" Never even considered it was a Pally. (someone on another board suggested I might have a Pally)

Good job. Sounds like its going well.
If you want to boost performance some more you can. You'll have to be careful with your temps though with a stock hsf.
What I would do is see how high your fsb will go with both fast memory timings and default memory timings. Benchmark both so that you can see how to get the best performance out of your system.
First, have you set memory timings to user define, and tried Cas 2-2-2-6? It may work. You may need a little more Vdimm. If you can run Cas 2 then lower your multiplier enough to rule out maxing your cpu (maybe to 8) and raise the fsb as high as you can (in 5MHz increments). Then bring your multiplier up to your cpu's limit and benchmark. Repeat this process with default memory timings and you will find your optimum settings.
Stability tests that I use are:
3DMark01
Playing UT2003
Prime95- overnight
Memtest86- ten loops

i thought max multi on the a7n8x was 12.5? oh well, anyways
if your not too lazy open your case and see what the stepping on the cpu is
sell it on ebay and buy a 2100+ 0247 tbred b ;)
dont bother w/c, especially if your temps are to your liking and noise is tolerable. you may want to get a better hsf
