I have an athlon xp 1700 oc @1.6ghz (FSB 144 vcore voltage 1.82). It runs under full load @ 49c and when pwrforming usual office tasks at 43C( case temp. 23 c). Would this fry my cpu in a year or so? Which are the safe temperatures for my processor? Although I like the thrill that oc my cpu gives I want no unpleasant surprises. What wouls recomendyou me to do?

We all know overclocking shortens cpu life. I think that anyone staying under 50c and 1.85v is putting very little extra wear and tear on the processor.

You won't be worrying about that. Before you know it, you'll have a new CPU before the life runs out. Just worry about the lifespan of your wallet first. :D

I always chuckle when I hear about overclocking shortening lifespan of CPU - what IS the lifespan of silicon, anyhow?

Still running my Celeron 300A @ 450 as a server here. Going on 4 years, I think. Will probably retire it for a newer AMD proc sometime soon - more to get RAID than to get a new processor.. ;-)

You know that you could just pick up a PCI RAID card and use it on your Celery.........

Nope.

My personal preference is not over 65C. But there is not safe temp. Temp measurement differ from one mobo to another. As long as the PC is stable...I say u r safe.

O/Cing shorthen the life span of the CPU in multiplier O/Cing. Shorthening the lifespan of the entire system in FSB O/Cing. Having said tht, the system should last more than..say 3-5 years (depends on how hard u push ur system). By tht time...u might already upgraded to newer tech.
